Along with cracking the glitz and the glamour quotient of the ever buzzing and alluring world of movies, many of our favourite celebrities have donned the superpower cape and been real heroes when it comes to giving it back to the society. Stuti Nabazza lists some of these power celebs, who are not just, a pretty face.
When it comes to drooling over SRK’s dreamy eyes, and going gaga over his movies, or stalking our ever beautiful Ms. Chopra, and watching Quantico, just to watch our desi girl slaying it, haven’t we all been there, done that? These hunks and gorgeous divas have always managed to steal millions of hearts with their charm and finesse. They are fashion, they are beauty and, they are talent. And we totally love them! But, SRK, my friends, is not only our fictional on-screen hero, but a hero who believes in giving it back to the society and sharing some goodwill. And Priyanka, well she might be a class apart, along with being our wonder girl in acting, she is also a part of UN’s ‘’Girl Up’’ campaign. Who else could represent an empowerment campaign that our very own superwoman?
Priyanka and SRK, they are just like the trailer of an endless list of celebrities, who support charities and causes close to their heart. And that’s what makes them so awesome, doesn’t it? Celebrities with a heart of gold, we like the sound of that! So, we list for you some of these super celebrities, who might not be able to lift trucks or resurrect life in real, but sure do believe in making a wonderful difference.
Our Heroes, being Human
Die hard Salman Khan fan, or not, you will definitely have heard of Salman’s ‘’Being Human’’ brand. ‘’Being Human’’ started by the Salman Khan foundation in 2012, was started as a clothing line, fashionable and chic, with the added perk contributing your bit to the causes of healthcare and education, now who wouldn’t love that? Salman, who is often touted as the most charitable celebrity in the industry, believes, and holds, spreading happiness close to his heart. If you thought that Being Human just provides class fashion, we are here to tell you that it also branches to Being Human Art, where, Salman who is also a gifted painter auctioned his painting, whose proceeds went to the social cause. Recently, the Being Human Foundation also introduced the ‘’Share your Superpower’’ initiative, where you can volunteer into a field which requires your qualifications and, you are a superhero!
Perfecting the moral code
If we are talking about ‘’being social’’, how can we not talk about our Mr. Perfectionist? Aamir Khan is not only a gentle handsome hulk in movies, he is also pretty much the same in real, we gladly note. Our Mr. Perfectionist might just be the most vocal and well aware personality. Aamir has supported various causes along his time in the industry, the Narmada Bachao Andolan where he lent his voice to the Adivasis, to supporting the Janlokpal Bill. His television show “Satyamev Jayate’’, was an instant hit among all households, who reserved their channels every Sunday, to listen to Aamir Khan decoding the various social evils and their solutions, providing a platform, for common people, who made a difference, to come and share their stories. Aamir was appointed as the UNICEF Regional Goodwill Ambassador in 2014 for South Asia. Early this year, he visited Bhutan to assess the country’s health and nutrition.
For the beautiful and lovely Bachchan family, charity sure begins at home. Our favourite Anthony here, Amitabh Bachchan, has supported various causes right from donating lakhs of rupees to farmers, to heading the ‘’Save our Tiger’’ campaign. Amitabh was also made UNICEF goodwill ambassador for polio Eradication Campaign. Taking a leaf out of his diary, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, isn’t far behind. She has pledged her eyes to the Eye Bank Association of India and also heads the Aishwarya Rai Foundation to help the needy. As Chandler Bing would say, could we be more in love with her? Our badass superwomen Priyanka Chopra and Deepika are too, sure the Jane of many trades. Alex Parrish here, might be taking down terrorist in reel , but up here in the world, along with being the advocate ambassador for UNICEF, she has supported the charitable organisation, Vision Mission Foundation, and NDTV’s Greenathon, an initiative to support eco-friendliness and improve electricity supplies to rural villages. You go, girl! And while we adore love this beautiful and gorgeous Deepika Padukone for her sass, here’s another reason. She recently opened to the public about having battled depression. If this wasn’t brave enough, our lady here has started ‘the Live Love Laugh’ Foundation working against depression. It was a much-needed initiative, and Deepika did it! How much more can we love her?
Working towards the bigger picture
Apart from these celebs, there’s a delightfully endless list of the causes our various celebs support, John Abraham for PETA, Milind Soman for Pinkathon, Gul Panag for Col. Shamsher Singh Foundation and Gul 4 Change. Nandita Das, who has always been a staunch activist advocated the ‘’Dark is Beautiful’’ through her advertising organization Leapfrog. Rahul Bose deserves a special mention in this rank of A-listers, his extensive work beyond Cinema is applaudable.
Recently with the rampant farmer suicides in Maharashtra, we saw a lot of A-listers coming up to express their regret. But if it’s Nana Patekar, actions have to speak louder than words. Nana Patekar has been donating a very generous amount to each widow of the farmers who committed suicides in the drought-hit Maharashtra. To relieve them of their debts, he collected funds amounting to around 80 lakh through an NGO Naam Foundation.
Across Bollywood, some of our very favourite stars have promoted or pledged to a social cause, right from Angelina George Clooney, Lady Gaga Hugh Jackman to Charlize Theron, Shakira and Oprah Winfrey.
Angelina and Brad are an inspirational duo. Although we regret the Brangelina divorce, it remains to say that their philanthropy is laudable.Angelina alone, supports more than 20 charities, including Afghanistan Relief Organization, Alliance For The Lost Boys Of Sudan, UNHCR, UNICEF, UN Millennium Project, Reporters without Borders, and the Clinton Global Initiative. Brad Pitt supports more than 40 charities by itself. Emma Watson is pretty could be a Hermione in real life, because her talent and contribution social causes are commendable. Emma, is a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and advocates UN Women’s HeForShe campaign in promoting gender equality.
Well, now that we know how philanthropic our favourite celebrities can be, don’t we all love them all the more?
