A green initiative is doing the rounds and now the Navi Mumbai crowd can finally benefit from it. Less than 45 days have passed for the launched for the initiative and already 10,000 users have registered on the mobile application.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) recommended a plan to provide residents cycles on rent. The initiative will encourage environment-friendly transportation in the city and help the people health-wise. The main aim of this initiative is to reduce pollution caused by the growing number of vehicles on the road. The NMMC has partnered with a bicycle rental startup called Yulu.
The NMMC will not incur any expense on starting this enterprise. The civic body’s plan has been executed via a contractor and the area will be leased to the contractor at a nominal rate who will also be responsible for everything, including building cycle stands and purchasing of the bikes. The cycles are also be fitted with a GPS tracking system and sensors so that the contractor can keep a tab on the cycles.
The cycles will be provided on an hourly basis. Digital locks will be in place to avoid thefts of bikes. Citizens will be able to use the cycles by simply swiping a card, paying via e-wallets, debit or credit cards.
Cycle stands will be built in Vashi, Nerul, and Belapur. The number of cycles and the locations will be improved further, depending on the response they receive in the beginning. This move has been accepted by cyclists.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) had broadcasted in January that it will develop a cycle track for its residents at Nerul.
The proposed track, which will be 2.5 km long, will also be a part of the second phase of improvement of the Jewel of Navi Mumbai Park, along the Palm Beach road.
