On 28th November, a 26-year-old ‘India’s daughter’, a veterinary doctor was on her way back home from a hospital in Gachibowli. At 9 pm, she reached the ORR toll plaza to find her scooter’s tyres punctured. Soon she heard a group of four unknown boys calling her out, telling her that carrying the punctured scooter will get her in trouble and offered to help despite her unwillingness. A strange fear settled in her heart. Out of this fear, she dialed her sister informing her about the ordeal. During this phone call, the doctor mentioned feeling scared of the ‘uncalled aid’. Her sister then suggested to leave the scooter behind and return back.
When the sister called the doctor back, her phone was switched off. The doctor had been abducted by the four boys named Mohammad alias Areef, Jollu Shiva, Jollu Naveen and Chinakunta Chennakashavulu and gang-raped. The four had plotted and planned this inhuman act. They had set their eyes on the doctor when she had initially come to park her scooter at the toll plaza in the evening. This is when they maliciously punctured her scooter’s tyres and then falsely pretended to help her.
The doctor was dragged behind the bushes by three while one switched off her phone. Though she tried to scream for help, it didn’t do much help as one of them cupped her mouth. The boys who themselves were drunk and were drinking also forced the doctor to gulp down half a bottle of whiskey. After this, each of the boys took their turn to rape her leaving her bleeding. She then fell unconscious. This, however, didn’t matter to them as they continued to rape her. Later when she regained consciousness, the fear of getting caught triggered the four ruthless humans to murder her in a gruesome manner. Once she stopped breathing, they dressed her back in clothes and wrapped her body in a bedsheet and burned it.
Hearing absolutely nothing back from the doctor, her worried family lodged a police complaint at 1 am. Sources state that around 6 in the morning, a farmer saw fire underneath a culvert but paid no heed thinking someone must be using it to protect themselves from cold. However, on his way back he noticed he saw something that looked like a raised hand. He went forward to see clearly and found the charred body of the doctor. This is how the Hyderabad rape case unveiled for the entire nation.
According to The Quint, all the four accused in this Hyderabad rape case were caught by the police and are charged with under Section 120(B) (criminal conspiracy), 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage), 506 (criminal intimidation), 376-D (gang-rape), 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) r/w 34 (common intention) and 392 (robbery) of the IPC.
Even seven years after the Nirbhaya rape case, nothing has changed. The memory of this dreadful incident was still fresh when immediately in the next year itself, the Shakti Mills Mumbai gang rape took place. Again in 2014 the Badaun gang rape took place when two cousins were raped. Now, the Hyderabad rape case too, has left the country shattered. There are yet so many cases that go unreported either by the victims or by the media; cases that though we are unaware of, still continue to take place across the nation.
How many more like the Hyderabad rape case is India yet to witness?
