Human Resources (HR) plays a vital role in the functioning of companies. They’re responsible for putting together a team to boost the company’s growth, to ensure its smooth running and at the same time, to see to the satisfaction of all employees. This has led to an ever-increasing demand for HR’s. Careers in Human Resources are strewn with hurdles and challenges, but with the ever-growing industry and businesses, careers in Human Resources can give you ample of success.

What does the job entail?

An HR is responsible for hiring and overlooking the process of employee selection. Their work can range from interviewing employees about their education and skill, performing their background checks to training and preparing the employees.Apart from having to go through the process of finding job applicants, an HR has several other duties on his shoulders

They handle relations between the employee and manager, and may also act as a tiebreaker if any conflict between employees arises. A majority of HRs are also responsible for managing the financial prospects of the business. Payrolls are handled by HR professionals, who go through the process of giving out salaries and bonuses to other workers. Payroll includes entering the data of employees into a database, which comprise of dues, bonuses, sick leaves etc. After reduction or addition, the final salary slips are prepared.

What are the necessary skills?

A good HR should be able to easily communicate, be it with the boss or a co-worker or a employee himself.  Communication is the most important thing managers look for while hiring employees. Be sure to brush up your communication skills, and speak fluently without much hesitation to increase your chances of getting hired.

An HR must also have a sense of fair judgment as they often find themselves in a conflict between the management and the employees. They must be able to satisfy both sides.

To become an HR, you need a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Human resource management.  The different types of degrees in Human resources, and what they comprise of are as followed:

  • PHR (Professional in Human Resources)—The PHR Certification exam is comprised of a test in the following areas: strategic development, workforce planning and employment, human resource development, total rewards, employee and labor relations and risk management.
  • SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources)—The SPHR Certification exam is comprised of a test in the following areas: strategic development, workforce planning and employment, human resource development, total rewards, employee and labor relations and risk management.
  • GPHR (Global Professional in Human Resources)—The GPHR Certification exam is comprised of a test in the following areas: strategic HR management, organizational effectiveness and employee development, global staffing, international assignment management, global compensation and benefits and international employee relations and regulations.
  • PHR-CA and SPHR-CA (PHR and GHR with state certification in California)—The California certification is designed to augment the PHR and SPHR certifications and it focuses on California laws and practices that are different from federal laws and practices.

Remuneration

You would start off as an intern, and slowly move up the ranks. As a fresher, an HR earns between Rs.15,000 to Rs.20,000 per month. Once you get more experience, salary increases. It can go up to Rs. 50,000 a month, or even go beyond Rs. 75,000 a month. The bigger the company, the higher the pay they offer. This is, on an average between Rs.3,00,000 to Rs.10,00,000 per annum.

Being an HR requires immense physical and mental strength, along with negotiation and communicative skills. Although difficult, this career option is surely worth the wait and the work!
