What is CUCET And How Is It Beneficial T

The Indian Education System recently rolled out the Central Universities Common Entrance Test or CUCET, an all-India entrance examination for securing admission into various Under-graduate/Integrated, Post-Graduate and research programmes of the Central/State Universities of India.

The announcement regarding this test was done by the Union Grants Commission (UGC) in March 2022. UGC chairperson Jagadesh Kumar Mamidala said that “CUET will provide a common platform and equal opportunities to students from across the country, particularly from rural and remote areas, and help establish a better connection with the universities.

54 central universities in India will incorporate this test as a part of their admission process. This test is proposed to be conducted as a Computer Based Test (CBT) by the National Testing Agency (NTA). During the admission process, students’ class 12 marks as well as the score of the CUCET will be taken into account. Delhi University followed a similar approach for its admission in 2021.

The New Education Policy 2020 has suggested a common entrance test for higher education keeping in mind the sky-scraping cut-off that the colleges had set to admit students. The CUCET was introduced to get rid of the cut-off system that put a great deal of stress on students during their board examinations.

CUCET will encourage a multi-disciplinary setup instead of compelling students to choose one single stream and offer an option to choose a foreign language and place more emphasis on critical thinking. This will enable students to acquire varied knowledge of the subjects.

By conducting CUCET, students will be tested on their verbal aptitude, logical reasoning and quantitative aptitude.

This entrance test will benefit the students in the following ways:

It will relieve the students of the unnecessary stress and pressure that comes along with the cut-offs laid down by the universities.

It will ensure that every student, regardless of every kind of discrimination, will receive equal opportunity.

The test will also make students realise the importance of aptitude building, and help them build and sharpen their skills necessary in the real world.

It will ensure students’ holistic development.

The CUCET is going to be made mandatory for students to seek admission to all universities. The test will compel students to not just focus on their academic grades but also work towards honing their skills and aptitude.

You can find the syllabus of the entrance exam here.
