In a recent statement by the defence ministry, the government will now fully fund the education of martyr’s children. Earlier it was announced that the ‘educational concession’ for these children would be Rs.10,000; but that limitation has been removed.
“The educational concession will be admissible only for undertaking studies in government/government-aided schools/educational institutes/military /Sainik schools and other schools or colleges recognised by the central or state governments, including autonomous organisations financed entirely by the central/state governments,” said the statement on Twitter.
The scheme applies to children of officers from armed forces studying in government aided schools, colleges and institutes or those recognised by state and central governments, and covers almost 3,400 children, which entails a total annual expenditure of Rs. 5 crore.
Naval Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba had earlier written to the government to revoke the order putting a monthly cap of Rs 10,000 on education fees for children of martyrs and disabled soldiers belonging to Army, Navy and Air Force. This small gesture would assure the families of our brave women and men that the nation cares for them and their sacrifices are truly appreciated by the government. These personnel have made the supreme sacrifice for the country and the provision of educational concessions to their wards is a small gesture to recognize their commitment to the defence of the country,” he said.
The scheme to cover educational expenses of martyr’s children was introduced in 1972, soon after the war with Pakistan.
