Every child has a dream profession. Be it an astronaut or a pilot or an actor, at one point, all of us had ambitions of being in a certain field but might have ended up in a totally different field due to various reasons. In this material world, a conventional job with a good salary is usually preferred but what if I told you that there are unique professions that you can pursue to earn well too? These unique, unconventional professions are very niched and might not have scope everywhere in the world but they surely exist. Listed below are descriptions of some creative, unconventional professions one can pursue: 

Foley Artist

A foley artist recreates sounds that cannot be properly recorded during shooting. They use props and record sounds as they watch the films which need particular sounds clearly like footsteps, breaking of glass, squeaky doors etc. This comes under Sound Design and one must be well aware of what props to use and how to record, edit and mix sounds. There is no particular qualification required but having a background in recording and sound design, and sound engineering makes it more efficient to become a foley artist. Foley artists are usually employed in the film industry to assist in producing sound for movies and series. 

Colour Expert

A colour expert or consultant, picks and chooses colours appropriate to their client’s needs. Now, this might seem like a simple job but it needs a keen eye to choose the right colours according to what suits the client the best or what the trends are. A colour expert can lend their expertise as a personal stylist, in collaboration with interior designers and architects, and cosmeticians. It can be pursued if you have a bachelor’s degree in fine arts or design or if you are familiar with computer-aided design (CAD) software, pay attention to detail and are creative.

Toy Designer

A toy designer plans, designs and makes toys for children. They can also be referred to as toymakers as well. Designing toys, deciding how to make them appealing to children, making prototypes and selling to manufacturers are the responsibilities of a toy designer. One can freelance or be affiliated with a design firm or toy manufacturing firm. A degree in industrial design, product design, consumer design and studio art or fine arts is preferred along with CAD skills, creativity and manual skills to make models. 

Floral Designer

A floral designer creates flower arrangements for events like weddings, celebratory ceremonies, birthdays and every other special occasion where flowers are in demand. Floral designers work in retail businesses. They creatively arrange flowers and other ornamental decorations to create bouquets, corsages, wreaths and other decorations related to the event. There is no formal degree requirement to pursue this job but various academies offer certificate courses for floral design which can be taken up. A floral designer can be employed in the entertainment industry, hospitality sector, design sector, event managing firms, interior decorating firms and outdoor design firms. 

Fragrance Consultant 

A fragrance consultant assists and recommends the perfect fragrance tailored to the preferences of the client. They must be knowledgeable in various kinds of fragrances and their components to advise customers on the best fragrances suited to their needs. Excellent customer service, marketing for the fragrances and a strong liking for fragrances and perfumes is a must for this job. A formal degree in chemistry is not required but having a marketing or business background and experience in the beauty industry is usually preferred. A fragrance consultant usually works in the beauty and cosmetic industry.

These unconventional professions might seem easy and fun, but they require excellent skills that are niched into the industry. Although these professions might not have the scope in all countries, it is worth pursuing what you have an eye and passion for.
