The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is almost here promising a thrilling extravaganza that unites cricket lovers globally. IPL 2025 will have higher stakes, fiercer rivalries, and unparalleled excitement. With the iconic tournament celebrating its legacy while embracing innovation, IPL 2025 will introduce fresh talents, bold strategies, and new venues that set the stage for unforgettable battles.
The IPL is around us so its auction took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on November 24 and 25 as the 10 teams filled the remaining slots in their squads ahead of the new season. The changed rules before the mega auction allowed teams to retain as many as 6 players or go with 5 players and use the right-to-match (RTM) on the one they would like to bring back from the auction.
Why is the IPL 2025 auction a ‘mega auction’?
Every three years, the IPL franchises reset the sorts. They are allowed to retain only a small number of players – a maximum of six this time – and must rebuild their squads at the mega auction. In other years, in between mega auctions, teams can retain as many players as they like before a ‘mini auction’, which takes place over one day. Mega auctions take two days because the number of players up for bidding is much higher than at mini auctions.
What is the Right To Match (RTM) option?
The Right To Match (RTM) option allows a team to match the highest bid for a player who was part of their squad last season. The RTM card has been reintroduced with a modification. The team placing the winning bid will get one final chance to increase their offer, and then the original team must decide whether to match the new bid or skip.
How many players were sold at the auction?
1577 players registered for the mega auction and the player pool has been reduced to 577, with 367 Indian players and 210 overseas players. The 10 teams collectively have 204 available slots to fill, including 70 spots for overseas players. The Oldest and youngest players included in IPL auction bidding are England’s James Anderson at 43 and Bihar’s Vaibhav Sooryavanshi at just 14. Incidentally, both players are eyeing their maiden IPL gig.
