The access to global content also facilitates the rise of content creators from diverse backgrounds, gaining visibility and influence online. Diverse backgrounds help global representation and create a sense of cultural appreciation.

Audiences crave and need authenticity, but are understanding the difference between appreciation and appropriation. They are actively judging the intention, context and consequence behind culture references and representations. When brands or creators can be authentic, they show humility, inclusiveness, and willingness to listen to and learn from the cultures they are engaging with. Audiences – especially younger generations and those that are active on social media – are better understanding the difference. They can tell when a campaign employs cultural markers as a trend or gimmick versus when it was developed in consultation with cultural stakeholders or communities. Whereas the audience today are demanding a shift from surface-level diversity to meaningful inclusion. Audiences expect that culture storytelling will be done with care, not just flair.

The global trade of stories breeds cross cultural collabs from creators and influencers from all corners of Earth, who can’t stop fusing their ideas and stories into rich, deep and layered content that can capture a global audience. The Gen Z actively engages with remix and access to global culture highlighting their open-minded attitude and high curiosity compared to older generations, redefining what mainstream means for them – Its now Multi-lingual and Multi-cultural.

The internet has turned global pop culture into an interactive and interdependent setting of shared customs in which borders become blurred, and creativity can thrive. This democratization of access through platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and Spotify means that artists and creators in every corner of the world can share their voices, styles, and stories—communicating and connecting with audiences around the world. With shared experiences such as K-pop, afrobeat, anime, and more, cross-cultural experiences are creating new forms of artistic expression that can resonate with the universal audience.

Audiences now expect a level of authenticity and accountability when consuming global pop culture and to be able to distinguish appropriation from appreciation.

As the world enters a post-pandemic reality, the prevailing exploration and emancipation of global expressions of culture and art in the digital world will continue to define mutual understanding, collaboration, and what pop culture can become in the 21st century. If the future of pop culture becomes unified communities where we just share and consume. Then pop culture will be borderless, collaborative, and representative of a world that could be more connected than it has ever been before.
