Undoubtedly, youth is the most interesting time of our life when we, as people, experience a wide range of emotions and are still finding ourselves. It’s bright, colourful, messy, tiring, and a very confusing period for most teenagers. As we grow up, we come to realise how the time enjoyed during youth is going to be one of the most memorable and carefree periods we’re going to experience. The adrenaline rush you feel when you meet your beloved friends after school, skip class and go to eat with your college group, the struggle of studying for exams and other endless instances make us feel nostalgic about growing out of youth. Anne with an E is a Canadian TV series which is loosely adapted from the classic, Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It’s a coming-of-age story of a young girl who is fighting to fit in and find her place in this world. Anne’s adventures as an orphan girl of the 19th century on Prince Edward land, throughout where she uses her wit and thoughtfulness to overcome unpleasant situations. As she navigates through her life we’re reminded that all of us are in the same boat and figuring our paths.

Atypical

Atypical is an American comedy-drama series focusing on the life of an 18-year-old Samuel Gardner who is neurodivergent. He decides it’s time for him to find a girlfriend, which sets Sam’s mother on a path of revelation. This act of his seeking more independence puts the whole family on a path of self-discovery. The series explores what it is to be atypical and what it means to be “normal”. It surely gives representation to neurodivergent people and portrays the story of Sam and his family well.

Derry Girls

Derry Girls is a Northern Irish sitcom depicting the life of 16-year-old Erin and her friends who are swimming through their teen years during the Troubles in Derry. Amidst all that political conflict, the five spirited students power through with optimism. It’s a show that’s filled with inspiration and so much laughter. It’s an emotional rollercoaster and a joy to watch their shenanigans and how their life unravels.

Twenty-five Twenty-one is a coming-of-age K-drama that screams what the essence of youth is. It is set during the IMF crisis where a teen fencer with big ambitions meets a hardworking young man seeking to rebuild his life before the crisis. It shows the naivety, determination, resilience and all the emotions that a teenager has. On My Block is a fun coming-of-age comedy series that follows four bright, street-smart friends who experience the joy, pain and newness of their high school journey. Living in a predominantly Hispanic and Black neighbourhood in South Central, Los Angeles, Monse, Ruby, Jamal and Cesar find their friendships being tested after they start high school.
