Thinking mechanisms

The reach of engineering is not just limited to the land, but also to the ocean. Combine your love for water and engineering with Marine Engineering

Ever observed a massive ship and wondered in awe about the amount of effort and brilliance it must take to design and build something so heavy, yet floatable on water? Especially since the sea is the most demanding means of travel. It is the job of a Marine Engineer to design and construct seagoing vessels such as ships, carriers, oil rigs and other marine vehicles in a way that they can operate in or around water, and withstand the waves and winds of the ocean. This field of engineering also combines various other disciplines of engineering such as electrical engineering, chemical engineering and computer engineering to design, develop, manufacture and test on-board systems and the watercraft propulsion, which is basically the mechanism that helps the ship or vessel move. Just like computer engineering, marine engineering also undergoes constant changes and advancements, which ensure efficiency of marine vessels and safety of the passengers and the goods carried by them.

WHAT YOU NEED
In order to pursue a degree in Marine Engineering, most colleges require atleast 60% marks in the science stream, with a special focus on subjects such as English, Physics and Chemistry. Cracking both JEE Main and JEE Advanced is of paramount importance to secure a seat in India’s best engineering colleges. There are also other common entrance tests such as the Marine Engineering & Research Institute Entrance Exams and the Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test. Some institutes such as the Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training (HIMT) also specify that for a Bachelor’s degree, a candidate should be between the ages of 17-20-yearsold and unmarried.
The courses that provide a degree in Marine Engineering are namely, Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), Bachelor of Science (BSc. or BS) or Beng (or B.E) in Marine Engineering, which usually span over 4 years. Alternatively, you can also go for a Diploma in Marine Engineering or a B.Sc in Nautical Sciences. You can also take up a Master’s degree in Marine Engineering after your Bachelor’s degree by acquiring a passing score in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
