Beyond Earth: Russian Cosmonaut Highlights the Mental and Physical Demands of Space Exploration at KCG Science Festival

The event highlighted the growing importance of scientific awareness among young people, offering students an opportunity to learn about advancements in space exploration, nuclear science and marine research while interacting with experts from India and Russia.

Space exploration demands far more than scientific knowledge and technological expertise; it requires exceptional mental resilience, physical endurance and the ability to remain composed under extreme conditions. This was the central message of Russian test cosmonaut Nikolai Tikhonov at the Science Festival India 2026, organised by the autonomous non-profit organisation for nuclear information centres development “Energy of the Future”, with the support of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation, Russia, and hosted by KCG College of Technology, Chennai.

The festival brought together distinguished representatives from Russia, scientific experts and students to explore scientific advancements, emerging technologies and international cooperation. The inaugural ceremony was attended by Aleksandr Fomin, Vice Consul and Deputy Chief of Mission, Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Chennai; Daria Korzheva, Project Manager at ANO Energy of the Future and organiser of Science Festival India 2026; Dr Annie Jacob, Director, KCG College of Technology; Dr. G. Prabhakaran, Principal, KCG College of Technology; and Dr K. V. Narayanan, Director – Operations, KCG College of Technology.

Delivering a lecture titled Space Is Calling, Tikhonov offered insights into nuclear technologies in space, as well as the demanding psychological and physical preparation required for human spaceflight. He explained how isolation, confined living spaces and the unfamiliar conditions of microgravity can place considerable stress on cosmonauts. Preparing for such an environment requires rigorous training to develop emotional stability, quick reflexes, sound judgement and the ability to respond effectively to unexpected situations.

Through videos illustrating parachute exercises and zero-gravity training, he demonstrated how cosmonauts develop their ability to perform tasks under pressure, strengthen their reflexes and make decisions in challenging circumstances. He also highlighted the rigorous selection process, which includes more than 180 examinations, as indicated in his presentation, alongside assessments designed to evaluate candidates’ psychological stability and suitability for spaceflight.

His address emphasised that becoming a cosmonaut requires sustained discipline, perseverance and the ability to overcome physical discomfort and mental stress. The session offered students a glimpse into the extensive preparation behind human space exploration and the personal qualities required alongside technical competence.

Dr Anand Jacob Verghese, Chairman of Hindustan Group of Institutions, said: “Scientific progress thrives on collaboration, curiosity and the exchange of knowledge across borders. Initiatives such as Science Festival India 2026 allow students to engage with international experts and understand the real-world challenges that shape scientific discovery. At Hindustan Group of Institutions, we believe that such experiences are essential to nurturing future-ready graduates who can contribute meaningfully to research, innovation and society.”

Highlighting the importance of international collaboration, Dr Annie Jacob, Director of KCG College of Technology, said: “Collaborations with international scientific and cultural organisations provide students with valuable opportunities to learn beyond the classroom. Our association with the Russian Centre of Science and Culture enables our students to interact with distinguished experts, gain exposure to global scientific developments and explore new possibilities in science and technology. Such initiatives inspire young minds to think beyond boundaries and pursue knowledge with curiosity and confidence.”

The festival also featured a career session on Nuclear Education Pathway, with contributions from Shri R. S. Sundar, former Executive Director (Operations), NPCIL; Ivan Ushakov, Senior Lecturer at Tomsk Polytechnic University, Russia; and Srivignesh Poonaram, a student at the Obninsk Institute for Nuclear Power Engineering and Ambassador of Nuclear Education. The session introduced students to educational pathways and career opportunities in the nuclear sector.

Ushakov also delivered a lecture on nuclear medicine, exploring the application of nuclear science in healthcare. The programme further broadened its scientific scope with a lecture titled Exploring Ocean Frontiers by Sivasankaran Bijoy Nandan, Professor in the Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, School of Marine Sciences, Cochin University of Science and Technology.

The festival concluded with science debates on the use of atomic technologies in space and in everyday life, judged by Nikolai Tikhonov, Ivan Ushakov and Srivignesh Poonaram. Students from both KCG College of Technology and Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science participated in the debates, bringing diverse perspectives to scientific discussions and engaging with the speakers on key questions in science and technology.
