In a jubilant celebration of its 50th year, Saarang, the annual cultural fest of IIT Madras, returns with a fervour that promises to captivate generations of students and patrons alike. Born in 1974 as the Mardi Gras, this cultural extravaganza has embedded itself deep in South India’s rich cultural tapestry, evolving into an integral part of Chennai’s cultural heritage. In 1996, to honor its Indian roots and pay homage to the spotted deer that roam the IIT Madras campus, the festival was rebranded as the beloved Saarang we know today.

Saarang has become a unique platform for emerging young artists and performers across an array of art forms, from freestyle dance and photography to acapella, graphic designing, and stand-up comedy. The five-day fest, from 10th to 14th January, will be teeming with events organized by the Institute’s cultural clubs, featuring competitions, workshops, and outstanding performances from across the globe.

With an expected footfall of 80,000, Saarang is more than just a college fest; it’s a celebration of South India’s cultural scene, offering something for everyone. From the Adventure zone for adrenaline junkies to a skateboard workshop for enthusiasts, Saarang ensures a diverse range of experiences. The ‘Incredible India’ initiative and the newly introduced Saarang Village promise to showcase the rich and beautiful cultures of India.

The crowning jewel of Saarang is the Professional Shows, featuring an impressive lineup of established and up-and-coming artists. From Classical Night on Day 0 to the sensational EDM Night and the power-packed Rock Night, the festival culminates in the Pop Show, headlined by the beloved Farhan Akhtar.

A highlight for many, the ‘Spotlight Lecture Series’ welcomes esteemed speakers with extensive reach across various cultural domains. Nassar, Lal, Rukmini Vijayakumar, Usha Uthup, Gautham Vasudev Menon and Manoj Bajpayee will share profound insights and captivating experiences, providing the audience with a unique opportunity to engage with cultural luminaries.

In line with their commitment to social responsibility, Saarang 2024 introduces the ‘Urjam’ campaign, focusing on energy conservation. In an era where climate change takes centre stage, ‘Urjam’ aims to encourage conscious decisions to thwart the depletion of energy resources, leading to pollution. Awareness programs in schools around Chennai, collaborative workshops, and panel discussions on energy conservation underscore Saarang’s commitment to making a tangible impact on the environment.

Saarang 2024 promises not just a celebration of culture and creativity but also a conscious effort to contribute positively to the world. As it marks 50 glorious years, this festival stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of IIT Madras and its commitment to fostering a culture of creativity, inclusivity, and environmental responsibility. Get ready to be part of history as Saarang 2024 unfolds its golden jubilee edition, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who attend.
