The tormenting questions that we face on a daily basis often begin with, “So, what next?” As a student, the idea of always having something ready after completing something big is intimidating. We tend to pace ourselves differently and that seems valid. However, some pressure from those around us, be it peers, friends, family or even annoying neighbours can prove to be a force of motivation and even at times a force of demotivation. What to do at such a juncture? Fortunately, there is a hack that can always come to our rescue.

We have grown up hearing that planning is crucial but the ‘how’ factor is something we all apply our own formula to. This is where this hack comes in.

Begin at the end:

Ask yourself what is your goal. In the race of getting a degree, we tend to forget that we are building a career and by the time we reach the end of it, we realise that it does not fit into our ideal setting due to several reasons. Keeping our present goal in mind is always helpful. This tells us that planning can be spontaneous and ever-changing, thereby bringing us to the next aspect.

Certainty and Focus:

No matter at what juncture you are as a student, focus is key. Needless to say, focus follows interest and certainty. Once you are confident in your pursuit as a learner and see yourself as a professional you have to ensure that you maintain and drive your energy in that direction.

Developing Confidence:

Trial and error are quite necessary. Your method of choosing your next step may depend on a deduction so try working in settings of your interest and then shortlist your way to your final one. Internships, short-term courses, workshops, etc., can be your methods of experimentation to

learn more about what you want to do. This will surely help you gain confidence in what you are good at doing and ultimately help you to decide.

At the heart of every career is a decision that is made up of interest and knowledge. Good research of your field and the opportunities available can help you create a path. Seeking help from professionals, mentors, and teachers is always a smart move and they can give you a good insight if you are stuck at any point. Moreover, a plan and a plan B can always be created as long as your focus is steady. If the question ‘What next?’ pops up again at another crossroad, this hack of tuning into your interests and knowledge can help you tune out the confusing chaos that builds up around you.
