No amount of postponement, censor cuts, or movie leaks could stop Thalapathy Vijay’s fans from celebrating his film, and they have yet again proved it. A week into its theatrical run, Jananayagan continues to draw packed audiences and rule the box office. For millions of fans, Jananayagan is more than just a film. It is a defining moment in Thalapathy Vijay’s career, as it is his first movie since becoming the Chief Minister and is widely expected to be his final appearance on the big screen as he steps into full-time politics. The film opened to an enthusiastic crowd, with fans turning theatres into a celebration arena not only in Tamil Nadu but all across the country.
The movie saw packed theatres across Tamil Nadu and overseas markets with advance bookings selling out within hours. Even with the concerns about piracy, its collections have held strong through the first week. The movie has collected over ₹230 crore worldwide, making it the 24th film ever in Kollywood to breach the ₹200 crore gross mark globally and the 9th in Vijay’s career to achieve the feat. According to the Sacnilk report, Jananayagan has collected around ₹8 crore as of Day 6, bringing the total Indian gross to ₹167.57 crore, while the overseas collection reached ₹3 crore on Day 6, taking the total gross overseas to ₹78.50 crore.
The Journey To Release:
H. Vinoth’s distinctive storytelling combined with Vijay’s strong screen presence has turned out to be one of the film's biggest strengths. The film is said to be a remake of a popular Telugu movie. The director explained that the movie retains about 50% of Bhagavanth Kesari starring Anil Ravipudi; however, the remaining 50% is purely his writing. Many other actors shared the screen alongside Vijay, namely Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani and Narain in major roles.

The film was originally scheduled to release on 9th January 2026. However, due to the delay in clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification, the release date was pushed forward. This postponement resulted in a piracy issue as the movie was leaked online, which in turn created a lot of distress among the fans. Some say that the movie was deliberately leaked to help the actor ace the Tamil Nadu election, but the director shut down those rumours during the movie promotional campaign, clarifying that a film worth 400 crore wouldn’t be leaked for political gain and the leak was purely a legal matter which was being dealt with by the police following the film producer's complaint.
Celebrations Worldwide:
The tradition of watching the first-day first show, often preceded by grand celebrations, remains deeply rooted in the South indian cinema culture. It is particularly evident among the devoted fan base of stars like Vijay and Rajnikanth, who turn every release into a festival with drum performances, fireworks, and celebrations outside theatres. As with every Thalapathy Vijay movie release, Jananayagan too turned cinema hall entrances into a celebration venue.

Fans gathered outside the screening houses hours before the showtime. Towering cutouts of the actor adorned with garlands can be seen placed near many theatres, which are then showered with milk in the traditional paal abhishekam, while drum performances, fireworks, and dance create a festive atmosphere. Videos of packed theatres, fan dances, and emotional reactions quickly flooded social media, dominating online discussions throughout the opening weekend.
The movie is also emotionally significant for many as it marks the end of an era for Thalapathy Vijay. Having acted in 69 films, including Jananayagan, Vijay has an immense fan base who have grown up watching him on screen. Therefore, this film almost felt like a farewell to him, with fans leaving the theatres teary-eyed and emotional.
Jananayagan's Critic & Audience Reception
Even after the huge piracy issue, Janayagan received massive support from the audience. The movie, however, has very mixed reviews from the fans and the critics. Many people took their reviews to social media platforms like X, Instagram, etc., thus creating a chain of discussion among fans.
Most of the audience enjoyed the movie, considering the fact that this is Vijay’s final film. One of the audience members conveyed on his X handle that this movie could've been a way more hit if it had been released during the Pongal festival, increasing the box office collection. Some even argued that the movie leak and the film’s ‘A’ certification have hampered a little bit of the movie’s success.

A few also mentioned that the only major aspects of this movie were Thalapathy’s on-screen presence and Anirudh’s background score that elevated the whole movie. One of them posted that the movie is a ‘grand farewell to actor Vijay who entertained us for so long’ and one claimed the movie to be a ‘paise-vasool’ entertainer.
Along with positive reviews, the movie received some negative ones too. A few fans criticised the storyline, while some pointed out the AI usage in the film. A movie critic said that the movie is an entertainer; however fails to leave a lasting impact on the audience. Many of the cinema lovers also pointed out that the movie was a remake of a Telugu movie and therefore misses originality.

A New Surprise For Vijay Fans:
The film underwent many changes after the CBFC instructed the makers to remove or modify certain scenes that didn't comply with its certification guidelines. At the movie’s success party in Chennai, director H. Vinoth shared that the six scenes that were eliminated from the theatrical version are expected to be added back by the Jana Nayagan team.
End Note
Despite facing delays, censor cuts, and piracy concerns, Jananayagan has emerged as one of the biggest Tamil releases of the year. Backed by Thalapathy Vijay's enduring star power and unwavering fan support, the film has turned its theatrical run into a celebration of his cinematic legacy. For fans, Jananayagan is more than a blockbuster. It is a farewell to an era defined by Thalapathy Vijay's larger-than-life screen presence and memorable performances. Whether remembered for its box office records or the celebrations it inspired, the film marks the close of one chapter and the beginning of another in Vijay's journey.
