Doctor’s Day

Every year in India, the first day of July is observed as Doctor’s Day in honour of the birth and death anniversary of legendary physician, Dr.  Bidhan Chandra Roy. Apart from being an efficient physician, Dr. Roy was also the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. He is commonly referred to as the architect of West Bengal since he founded five of West Bengal’s most eminent cities – Durgapur, Kalyani, Bidhannagar, Ashokenagar, and Habra.

Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy was born on 1st July 1882, and passed away eighty years later on the same date.  He was honoured with the Bharat Ratna Award in 1961. The Government of India declared July 1st as the Doctor’s Day in 1991 as a mark of respect to Dr Roy.

In the past decade, the development in the medical field is remarkable and thus, Doctor’s Day is celebrated to emphasize the importance of doctors in our lives. And this is done by paying tribute to one of their greatest representatives.

Usually, the staffs of healthcare organizations organize various events and activities for the Doctor’s Day celebration. The Rotary Club of North Calcutta and North East Calcutta Social & Welfare Organization organizes big event every year for the grand celebration of the Doctor’s Day.

Now that you know, do wish your doctor today and thank them for all their services and medicines.
