Cristiano Ronaldo is having a stellar year and his performance on field backed by several awards proves just why.  Here’s a look back at what made Cristiano Ronaldo the most deserving player for the FIFA Men’s Player 2016 award.

In May 2016, Ronaldo scored the winning penalty for Real Madrid against Atletico to win his team the Champions League and bag the third European title of his career.

When he captained the Portuguese national team, he took his team to victory during the Euro 2016 after defeating France in the finals.

During the previous season, Ronaldo scored 51 goals in club competitions.

With all this and more, we definitely see why Ronaldo deserves the honour. While FIFA ran their awards jointly with the Ballon d’Or during the last five years, their agreement with France Football magazine has ended and both organizations now host their own competitions.

The Best FIFA awards were voted for by the national team captain, manager, and a journalist, and fans registered on FIFA.com from 211. During voting, each group holds 25 percent of electoral weight  and players are judged for their performances from Nov. 20, 2015 to Nov. 22, 2016.

Ronaldo earned 34.54 percent of total votes while Messi finished second with 26.42 percent and Griezmann was third at 7.53 percent.

“I’d like to thank my team, national team, Real Madrid, my trainer, my family that came here, my son, my brothers,” Ronaldo said in accepting the award. “2016 was the best year of my career, the trophy shows that people aren’t blind and watch the games.
