The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) made the decision to allow students of class10 and 12, who participate and represent the country in international sporting events, to sit for their board examinations at a later date if the events overlap with the exam schedule.
The circular generated by the board read, “It has been decided to…extend such facilitation hereon to all such students whose CBSE board exams clash with their participation in any international sports event that is recognised by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the student participates as a representative of India. For such students, their examination will be conducted at a later stage, at a date mutually convenient to the student and the board, before the declaration of board results.”
The board wants to encourage young sporting talent, but without the students having to skip either their exams or the sporting events. This decision was reportedly taken after they received multiple requests from the students themselves, over the last few years.
Students have till January 31st to inform the board’s regional offices in writing if they are participating in any international sports events that will take place during the upcoming exam season, along with a recommendation from the Sports Authority of India. Hindustan Times reports that in March- April 2018, the board had given concessions to nine students studying in CBSE schools from across the country as their events coincided with the exam dates.
The board will decide on a date that is mutually convenient to the student and the board themselves. However, the exam must take place before the results are declared.
“Schools have been requested to bring this information to the notice of their students who are actively participating in competitive sports and are likely to participate at an international sports event so that they can be benefited,” said a CBSE official.
The board examinations this year for class 12 are set to be conducted between February 15 and April 3, 2019, and Class 10 exams between February 21 and March 29, 2019.
