Titled as the world’s biggest fashion night, this year’s Met Gala was off the hook. It’s the one event where all famous people and celebrities dress according to the theme and bring their A-Game on the red carpet. All of them are personally invited by Anna Wintour- the editor in chief of Vogue at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The most important reason for the Gala is to rejoice in the opening of the Met’s annual Costume Institute exhibition, whose theme is the highlight of the gala.
Some of the previous displays included themes like Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, at which most of guests wore halo ornaments; the Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology, where everyone dressed in their robot best; and China: Through the Looking Glass, where some celebrities attempted to tread lightly through some cultural appropriation.
The extravagant outfits were a knockout with the theme of the 2019 Gala titled as ‘Camps: Notes on Fashion.’ This year, an essay with instructions was sent out regarding the theme but that didn’t make it any easier to dress fittingly. Inspired from Susan Sontag’s essay, “Notes on Camp,” the theme of Camp has been nearly impossible to define. Thousands of dollars are paid to makeup artists, hair stylists, designer for creating the desired look for the event. The theme of camp has been an instrument of queer and marginalized people to challenge cultural norms. Drag is one of the examples of campy.
The theme of Camp is filled with paradox. If you’ve successfully achieved the Camp look, then my dear, you’ve failed because of the efforts you put into it.
Of course, this year has brought about some serious looks with feathers, sequins, long trails and beads with an insane hairdo and extravagant makeup to complete the look.
Here are a few fascinating looks of this year’s Met Gala to satiate your curiosity.
