Gitam University in Hyderabad has introduced a BSc (blended) course with an aim to motivate students to join basic sciences as a subject of study and help them find a rewarding career in pharmaceutical and chemical industry.
The new degree at GITAM has been developing in close collaboration with the University of Melbourne, Australia.
This progressive new curriculum is a combination of the four major disciplines of science (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Biology) that students will use as curriculum for two years, followed by a diverse but strategic choice of major streams in the third year.
50 students will be selected for the programme through an entrance test conducted by the university which will be sponsored by Laurus Labs. From payment of an annual fee of Rupees 50,000 to payment of stipend of Rupees 5,000 per month for 10 months, Laurus Labs will be taking care of students’ incidental and boarding expenses.
Laurus Labs chief executive officer C. Satyanarayana explained speaking before signing of MoU with the University, “In effect, there is no financial burden on either the student or her parent, further there is a job guarantee.” The course will also provide internships for three semesters in the company. After qualification, the student would have the option of joining the company or looking for opportunities in some other company.
The graduates will be eligible to apply for postgraduate Science programmes at The University of Melbourne on an equivalent basis. It will also support students who wish to explore postgraduate options at other institutions by promoting the quality assured credentials of the B.Sc. (Blended).
After deliberations, delegates from The University of Melbourne, Principal, Head of Departments and professors of GITAM Hyderabad came to a conclusion to start this program after the Board of Studies approved.
