Car design courses are offered through many programs, including bachelors’ and master’s degrees in car design, industrial design, vehicle design, mechanical engineering and transportation design. Some schools offer car design classes in postgraduate certificate programs or full certificate programs in the field. Here are a few fun things you would learn as part of this degree:
3D MODELING
3-D modeling is a vital skill in all future car design courses. 3-D modeling involves transferring 2-D
images into three-dimensional models. This includes working work with a variety of materials and learning the essentials of a three dimensional representation.
CAR DESIGN HISTORY
To understand modern car design and the future possibilities of the field, it is important to understand car design history. Car design courses teach students the origins of car design and where it has led over the last century. Special topics include designing for different purposes and populations, changing cultural aesthetics and modern design trends.
COMPUTER AIDED STYLING
This course takes students through the essentials of using digital design programs for car design. Students will become proficient in different car design software programs, including Rhino, Alias Sketchbook Pro and LightWave 3D. The course takes students through a number of different projects, including designing specialty cars, production cars or concept cars
RACE CAR DESIGN
Car design courses, such as this one focused on race cars; give students the opportunity to create their own cars from scratch. Some programs require that as part of this car design course, students create vehicles that run on solar power, and they all require that students think of a design and put it together, including designing and assembling parts such as the power train, the fuel injection system and painting the vehicle.
