The victory of Donald Trump

In the U.S., Donald Trump shocked much of the country when voters went to the polls on Nov. 8 and elected the real estate mogul as the country’s 45th president. The results got the world acting with shock and disbelief. It got celebrities and world leaders to get united in expressing feelings of uncertainty for the future.

Refugee Crisis

The refugee crisis and the Syrian conflict dominated international headlines as hundreds of thousands of refugees fled the war-torn country, many ultimately dying trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea trying to reach Europe.

The Demonetization Move

To curb black money, terrorism and corruption high denomination notes of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 were rendered illegal, sending the country in a tizzy but its a bold and fantastic move for a long term stable economy.

Girl power at Olympics 2016

21-year old badminton star PV Sindhu from Hyderabad became the first Indian woman to win a silver medal at the games, as well as the youngest Indian to ever win a medal. And 23-year old Sakshi Malik from Haryana proved that wrestling is a sport for women, too. With her bronze medal, Malik became the first woman wrestler from India to win at the Olympics.

Celebrity Deaths

Starting from January, we saw the deaths of Die Hard and Harry Potter star Alan Rickman, Eagles frontman Glenn Frey, and beloved broadcaster Terry Wogan. Singer David Bowie, one of the most influential musicians of his era, died of cancer on January 10 at the age of 69. We lost Prince, we lost Muhammad Ali, we lost Zsa Zsa Gabor, Leonard Cohen, Gene Wilder, and many, many more. Not forget George Michael right on Christmas Eve. The year just couldn’t end more badly!

Ruling Twitter and the hearts of people

Sushma Swaraj, India’s external affairs minister, ruled Twitter in 2016. Swaraj paid close attention to every request sent to her on the microblogging site and even rescued several Indians stuck abroad.

Calling it splits

2016 will also be remembered for celebrity couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie calling it quits and breaking the hearts of fans. Former Jackass star Steve-O and celebrity tattooist Kat Von Dee broke up at the start of March this year after a three-month romance. It is unclear what led to the split but both immediately took to social media to delete their pictures together. In one of the other biggest celebrity breakups, Sharon and Ozz Osbourne called time on their relationship just shy of their 34th wedding anniversary.
