Mumbai To Host The World Youth Chess Championship In October

Mumbai will be witnessing a pool of some of the most finely talented minds in October when it will host the World Youth Chess Championship. 

This championship is a chess tournament that is organised every year for the youth (boys and girls) ageing under 8, under 10, under 12, under 14, under 16, and under 18. Every year, 12 participants are crowned as the world champions. 

This year, a young boy named Praggnanandhaa R. from Chennai who is the world’s second youngest grandmaster in chess too will be participating in the World Youth Chess Championship.

The championship is going to be hosted in Mumbai from 1st to 13th October. A total of 62 nations have confirmed their participation for the World Youth Chess Championship. From these 62 countries, 235 players will be seen in action. 

America is going to have the largest contingent for this championship. According to sources, 6 grandmasters have confirmed their participation in the tournament. The other countries that have confirmed their participation in the World Youth Chess Tournament include France, Norway, UAE and Iran.   

India’s challenge for the boys’ category will be led by the 14-year-old Praggnanandhaa and the girl’s team will be led by Divya Deshmukh from Nagpur. Since the inception of this tournament in 2004, the Indian youth has successfully excelled and won many gold, silver and bronze medals.

The tournament is going to be organised under the guidance of  All India Chess Federation in suburban Powai at the Renaissance Hotel. The tournament will be graced by the attendance of union minister Nitin Gadkari and the chief minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis for the inaugural ceremony.
