BACHELOR OF ARCHITECTURE (BArch)

This degree provides sufficient groundwork for students who wish to pursue a degree in architecture. The syllabus is a blend of theoretical as well as practical knowledge with subjects such as a theory of structures, architectural drawing, design applications, building science and services, etc.

3 Years

10 + 2 or equivalent with mathematics as one of the subjects

CAREER STEPS:

You can proceed to pursue a Masters degree in Architecture (MArch) or choose a short-term course to gain a specialisation such as green architecture, building science, etc. Another option is to learn on the job and proceed to the practice of architecture.

BACHELOR OF MASS COMMUNICATION

The aim of this degree is to introduce students to the various branches of mass media such as advertising, journalism, public relations, television, etc. These courses generally work on a semester system and practical assignments are an integral part of the assessment process. You can also choose to specialise in a specific branch such as journalism or advertising in your final year. There are many versions of this degree offered in different states and colleges. Though names may differ, the core content of these courses is similar.

CAREER STEPS:

After graduation, pursue a specialised post graduate degree or diploma in journalism, advertising, public relations, animation, etc depending on your area of interest. Some people also choose to work in a media-related field directly after graduation.

BACHELOR OF FASHION TECHNOLOGY (BFTech)

This course is a blend of technical information and creativity. The course provides a comprehensive understanding of the garment manufacturing process, starting from the nature of fabrics to printing, dyeing and other processes. There is also scope for innovation and creativity by coming up with ways of modifying and improving the manufacturing process. However, there are not many colleges in India that offer this course at an undergraduate level.

3 or 4 years (depending on course and institute)

CAREER STEPS:

This degree equips you to find employment as a production manager with a fashion house, fashion designer/label or garment manufacturer. This degree can also be of help for those who wish to become fashion entrepreneurs by starting their own fashion label.

BACHELOR OF HOTEL MANAGEMENT (BHM)

One of the hottest industries, which has seen a significant boom in the past decade, is the hospitality industry. Career avenues within this industry are diverse, and through this degree, you can gain a working knowledge of the hospitality business. There are other undergraduate courses relating to the hospitality industry such as:

Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BHMCT) Bachelor of Tourism and Hotel Management (BTHM) Bachelor of Catering Technology and Culinary Arts (BCT & CA)

3 or 4 years (depending on course and institute)

CAREER STEPS:

Career opportunities are plenty; you can work with restaurants, resorts and hotels, cruises, catering services, etc. Those who wish to become entrepreneurs in the field of hospitality will also benefit from this degree. Some students opt for a postgraduate degree in hospitality as well, but to avoid a repetition of their undergraduate syllabus it would be a better option would be to do a specialised MBA.

BACHELOR OF ARTS BACHELOR OF LAW (BA LLB)

While the law has traditionally been a popular career choice, new avenues such as intellectual property rights, environmental laws, international laws, etc have created an increase in the number of law aspirants. Those who wish to pursue law after class 12 can opt for an integrated degree (BA LLB) and not the Bachelor of law (LLB) degree as the latter requires candidates to have completed their graduation in any stream (however, the LLB degree is still 3 years in duration). There are other integrated law courses available as well such as BSc LLB, BCom LLB, etc.

CAREER STEPS:

After securing this degree, one can begin practising law, either with a government agency or private company. Other options include becoming a private legal advisor or pursuing further study in this field – Master of Law (LLM), Master of Business Law (MBL).

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN VISUAL COMMUNICATIONS (BVC)

Art, design and communication have merged into a single degree to give birth to the Bachelor of Science in Visual Communications (BVC). The course content covers topics such as art aesthetics, visual designing tools and software, principles of design, etc. Through the duration of the course, students are taught about different mediums and manipulations of visual communication such as video editing, motion graphics, storyboarding, illustrations, graphic design, etc. After being introduced to these, one can choose a specialisation in the third year.

CAREER STEPS:

The degree throws up a number of opportunities in the field of design and communication such as becoming an art director, graphic designer, illustrator, video editor, etc. If the need is felt, a further specialisation in the form of a diploma can be pursued (such as animation, 3D technology, etc).
