With barely a few months left for the IIT-JEE examinations, Mr. Vivek Gupta, Co-Founder and Director, Plancess Edusolution Pvt Ltd, helps students with a month-wise study plan
FIRST STEPS
The aspirants should have finished the syllabus by November at the latest, and therefore the rewriting must have begun from the start of December. The revision has to be in an orderly manner:
- The earliest days must be devoted to revision; you should be wrapping up every idea from every topic of.
- Take a notebook and write everything in it with an abstract on every topic. For each concept, leave five pages. You will utilise them later. For now just look at every concept and gauge how well you know it: either you can answer any question on the concept or you do not know the concept at all; rate it on a scale of 1 to 5 stars.
- For an exam like IIT-JEE, you cannot afford to miss any concept, so in the first 10 days the goal should be to recognise all concepts.
- For the next 20 days your aim should be to strengthen the concepts you are unsure of. You must ensure that all the subjects are done by the end of the 20 days and that your ratings are all 5-star.
- How can you find out how well you know a matter? There is no sure way, however, you can always attempt to resolve the trickiest questions/problems from every lesson to gauge your proficiency. Tips to improve your rating:
- Go back and self-check your practice questions/problems.
- Ask the professor to explain the concept again.
- Revisit the concept and solve more problems.
- Take up related topics and work on them too. This will not only save you time, but also help you move fluidly to another topic, which is very important.
JANUARY
January is the month to combine all the revision. You might have got a 5-star rating on a concept, but that does not mean it will stay 5 till your exams.
- Repeated revision is necessary. Start with practicing the concept you have learnt during December. You might have learnt it with some effort, but you must be able to recall it without any effort. During the exam, you won’t have a lot of time to think, thus the concept behind a complicated question should come to you easily.
- At the end of each week you should again examine your ratings; they should not slip at any time. If they are sliding than you should again revise the concept.
FEBRUARY
You might have strengthened your concepts, but in JEE the questions are not very easy. You should also know all the methods of solving a problem.
- There are many ways to solve a concept-based problem and it is essential you know all of them. This will save you time during the exam. In the five pages you left in your notebook after each concept, write complications of the theories where altered approaches are used.
- Analyse all approaches, since ther is a chance that questions can be easily resolved by an unexpected approach.
This will take you the whole month, but in the end, you will be proficient in every lesson and will know the different approaches and how they can be used to solve questions.
MARCH
The whole of this month must be focused on solving papers of past JEE exams.
- You should consider each paper to be the real exam and aim to finish it within the stipulated time. It is important to practice writing papers, so that you can face the main exam with more confidence.
- Write at least two papers a day and aim for finishing at least 50 in the month.
- The most important part of this exercise is learning from your errors in the papers. While going through every paper, analyse why the solution is wrong. Was it because you were unaware of the concept? The time was insufficient? You made a silly mistake? Do the necessary things to improve your score.
Tip to minimise errors:
JEE is competitive and even the loss of 1 mark will change your life. Thus it is very important to eliminate silly mistakes. The best way to do this is to think through all your steps again before marking the solution. If you have been practicing you should be confident that your answer is correct.
APRIL
Rewrite every formula and concept again everyday until the exam. Revision here would entail reading the formula and pondering on the kind of problems you have solved using it.
