The International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B) has once again garnered international recognition for its unwavering commitment to sustainability. On September 24, 2025, Prof. Debabrata Das, Director of IIIT-B, received the prestigious Global Green University Award on behalf of IIIT-B during the Green School Conference 2025, hosted at the ILR School, Cornell University, New York.
This marks the third consecutive year that IIIT-B has been honoured with this global distinction, underscoring the institute’s leadership in advancing sustainable practices across academics, research, and campus life. The award recognises universities that demonstrate measurable impact in reducing environmental footprint, promoting renewable energy adoption, fostering green innovation, and nurturing an ethos of environmental responsibility among students and faculty.
Accepting the award on behalf of the entire IIIT-B community, Prof. Das highlighted the institute’s holistic vision for sustainability. “This recognition is not just for our campus, but for the collective effort of the IIIT-B family – faculty, students, staff, and alumni – who have all embraced the responsibility of building a greener tomorrow,” he said.
Over the years, IIIT-B has pioneered sustainability initiatives ranging from energy-efficient infrastructure, clean energy, smart waste disposal and water conservation measures to integration of sustainability-driven research in emerging areas such as waste composting, air quality monitoring technologies for smart cities and digital governance for environmental policy. The recognition at Cornell University reflects the institute’s growing influence as a global thought leader in sustainable education and innovation.
The IIIT-B community celebrates this milestone as a reaffirmation of its commitment to embedding environmental stewardship at the core of higher education. As global challenges around climate change and sustainable development intensify, the institute remains dedicated to contributing solutions through research, innovation, and community action.
