IGNOU Launches Up MA In Bhagavad Gita Studies

Every religion has a sacred book or document by which people lead their lives. Similarly, the Bhagavad Gita, meaning ‘The Song of the Supreme’ is a 700-verse Hindu scripture, which is part of the epic Mahabharata, one of the oldest and most sacred books of Hinduism. The Bhagavad Gita encourages us to live life with purity, strength, discipline, honesty, kindness and integrity. It encourages one to find our purpose and live it fully.

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a post-graduate programme in Bhagavad Gita Studies. The Course will be part of the School of Humanities and offered through open and distance learning mode (ODL) from July this year. Candidates with bachelor’s degrees can apply for MA in Bhagavad Gita Studies online. This MA course in Bhagavad Gita Studies has flexible study durations of two to four years with a total of 500 seats for the course. The medium of instruction will be Hindi. It will be structured for 80 credits.

Course Overview

  • This course will integrate the knowledge of the Brahma Sutras, the six philosophies (Shad Darshanas), and the Upanishads with scientific and cultural aspects.
  • It provides insights into combating poverty, eliminating extremism, addressing issues of war, military, environment, management, sociology, and human values, and the scientific perspectives of Indian traditions.
  • Individuals from different backgrounds in knowledge, science, art, and literature can enrol in this program.
  • With a full of understanding the Indian sciences and gaining practical knowledge this program aimed at building well-rounded educated citizens with classic personalities.
  • Prominent subjects are the historical context of the Gita, its key teachings, commentaries by various scholars, and its application in contemporary life.
  • Students will engage in academic study accurately by improving their understanding of this profound text.

The Purpose of the Course

The whole purpose of this program is to present the accepted educational pathways, subjects, and various facets of knowledge and science to all sections of society as envisioned in the national education policy. The postgraduate degree program in the Bhagavad Gita imparts the understanding of originative Vedic literature, various scriptures, Puranas, epics, cultural consciousness, and scientific aspects of Indian traditions to all sections of society.

Fees Structure

The fee for the full two-year course is Rs 12,600, payable as Rs 6,300 per year. Additional fees, such as registration and development charges, may apply. The fee structure highlights the IGNOU’s commitment to making education accessible to every deserving student.
