APJ Abdul Kalam once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Education is the key to success, a fundamental right and the government of India has implemented various schemes to ensure that financial constraints do not hinder students from pursuing higher education. 1. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan: Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is a comprehensive and integrated flagship programme of the Government of India to attain Universal Elementary Education (UEE), covering the entire country in a mission mode. Launched in 2001-2002 in partnership with the State Governments and Local Self-Governments, this programme aims to provide useful and relevant elementary education to all children in the 6 to 14 age group.
2. Samagra Shiksha: The Samagra Shiksha scheme is an integrated scheme for school education covering the entire gamut from pre-school to class XII. The scheme aims to ensure that all children have access to quality education with an equitable and inclusive classroom environment that takes care of their diverse backgrounds, multilingual needs, and different academic abilities and makes them active participants in the learning process.
3. CBSE Udaan Program: Launched by CBSE under the guidance of MHRD, this scheme provides free-of-cost support to female students of classes 10 and 12 to prepare for the engineering entrance examination. Under this program, students are provided free offline/online resources through virtual weekend contact classes and study material on pre-loaded tablets while studying in Class XI and Class XII for preparation for admission tests to various premier engineering colleges in the country.
4. Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan: This scheme aims to increase the enrolment rate by providing a secondary school within reasonable distance of every home. It also aims to improve the quality of secondary education by making all secondary schools conform to prescribed norms, removing gender, socio-economic and disability barriers, and providing universal access to secondary-level education. 5. Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas Scheme: The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) scheme was launched by the Government of India in July 2004, for setting up residential schools at upper primary level for girls belonging predominantly to the Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Minority Communities. This scheme provides necessary infrastructure and quality education to girls from disadvantaged groups of girls in the age group of 10-18 years aspiring to study in Classes VI to XII; belonging to SC, ST, OBC, Minority communities and BPL families to ensure smooth transition of girls from elementary to secondary and upto class XII wherever possible.
6. National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS): The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) is a central government initiative aimed at supporting economically weaker students. The scheme provides financial assistance to meritorious students from class 9 onwards, helping them complete their secondary and higher secondary education. Eligibility: Students from economically weaker sections with a parental income not exceeding Rs. 3.5 lakh per annum. Scholarship Amount: Rs. 12,000 per year. Selection Criteria: Students must clear the selection test conducted by the state/UT government.
7. Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS): The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) is designed for the wards of ex-servicemen and former Coast Guard personnel. This initiative helps students pursue professional courses in higher education institutions. Eligibility: Children of ex-servicemen and widows of defence personnel. Scholarship Amount: Rs. 3,000 per month for girls and Rs. 2,500 per month for boys. Courses Covered: Engineering, medical, dental, MBA, MCA, and other professional courses.
8. Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships for College and University Students: The Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships is a merit-based scholarship program that provides financial assistance to students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Eligibility: Students who have scored above 80% in their Class 12 examinations and whose family income does not exceed Rs. 8 lakh per annum. Scholarship Amount: Rs. 10,000 per year for graduation and Rs. 20,000 per year for postgraduation. Selection Criteria: Based on Class 12 performance and financial need.
9. Post-Matric Scholarship for SC/ST Students: This scholarship is provided by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and is aimed at SC/ST students to support their higher education. Eligibility is SC/ST students pursuing higher studies from a recognized institution. Scholarship Benefits include Tuition fees, maintenance allowance, and other educational expenses. Income Limit is Family income should not exceed Rs. 2.5 lakh per annum.
10. State-Specific Scholarship Schemes: Many state governments offer free education schemes for students belonging to economically weaker sections including Tamil Nadu Free Higher Education Scheme for first-generation graduates. Rajasthan’s Mukhya Mantri Nishulk Coaching Yojana for students from backward communities. Delhi’s Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojana for SC/ST students preparing for competitive exams.
