If you’re confused between your love for Biology and Engineering, we think Biomedical Engineering might interest you.
Biomedical Engineers design and develop medical systems, equipment, and devices. This requires in-depth knowledge of the operational principles of the equipment (electronic, mechanical and biological), as well as knowledge about its application. Biomedical engineers work at the intersection of engineering, life sciences, and healthcare. These engineers take inspiration from applied sciences (including mechanical, electrical, chemical, and computer engineering) and physical sciences (including physics, chemistry, and mathematics) and apply them to biology and medicine.
Biomedical Engineering has germinated over the years in response to advancements in science and technology. Throughout history, humans have made increasingly more effective devices to diagnose and treat diseases and to alleviate, rehabilitate or compensate for disabilities.
WHAT YOU NEE
For your 10+2, you need to choose science as your subject of interest with the combination of four evergreen subjects – Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. Once you are done with your higher secondary school examination, you need to appear entrance exams like JEE (Mains and Advance).
There are a host of different colleges offering a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. You can opt to write common entrance tests such as JEE Mains and JEE Advanced, Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL) Common Entrance Test.
After clearing the entrance tests, you are expected to focus on key areas of your field of study, once you are in the college of your choice. Important areas one needs to focus on are nanotechnology, fluid dynamics, mechanical and electrical engineering, and more biologically-inclined subjects such as cardiology, physiology, and biochemistry. Degrees for Biomedical Engineering include B.Tech, Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) or Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. or B.S).
The critical skills needed by a biomedical engineer include a well-rounded understanding of several areas of engineering as well as the specific area of application. This could include studying physiology, organic chemistry, biomechanics, or computer science. Continuing education and training are also necessary to keep up with technological advances and potential new applications. If you want to pursue a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, you need to appear for GATE examination for admission into one of the top IITs and NITs.
