The Rules of Formal Dressing

Summer break is here which means it’s time interviews. We tell you how to dazzle prospective employers with your sharp attire

For the Gentlemen

A formal shirt with denims can never qualify as formal wear

Your belt should match the colour of your shoes; a dark coloured pant should always be matched with a black belt

Socks should not be darker than the colour of your shoes and should reach your mid-calf

Your tie should reach the tip of your belt buckle and should contrast the colour of your shirt (dark tie with light coloured shirt or striped tie with plain shirt)

Watches can be leather strapped or metal strapped but should fit the wrist well

Formal shoes are a must; black and brown colours only. Dark coloured pants must always be matched with black shoes

Avoid shirts with thick stripes or checks.
Instead, wear plain shirts or shirts with thin stripes

The end of your pants should reach the top of your shoes, that is the ideal length. Wear striped pants only with plain shirts and vice versa

You can match your socks with the colour of your shoes or pants (this is an ongoing debate) as long as it matches the general colour scheme

For the Ladies

Well-fitted the look clothes are essential. Make sure your pants, shirts and jackets are not too baggy or too tight

Using handbags that look crushed dampens your professional look. Use well structured handbags

Formal does not mean old fashioned. You can opt for fun, girly elements in your clothing like a frills or floral prints as long you balance the look

The ideal length of the skirt should be around your knee or just above it. Remember, your skirt will ride up when you are seated so pick a length you are comfortable with

Always wear distracting closed footwear. Exposing your toes is a ‘formal fashion’ faux pas

It is a good idea to add a feminine touch to your attire through your watches, bracelets, earrings and other accessories. But make sure it’s not too loud and distracting
