Your Voice – April 2013

When does a catchprase come to your aid?

Renita D’Silva, 21 (social media executive)
I like making up my own catchphrases. Once, I had a fight with a friend, and when we had cooled off, I said “Let’s hug it out b**ch”. It was funny, we laughed and forgot about the fight. I used that for months before it wasn’t funny anymore.

For someone who visits 9GAG more than Facebook, ‘If you know what I mean’ is a hard to put down expression! The phrase, now synonymous with Rowan Atkinson’s face, is meant for the use of those whose imagination stretches beyond the ordinary, if you know what I mean!

Vinay Gholap, 21 (media student)
Having grown up watching the Star Wars films, the line “May the force be with you” stuck with my friend group. We use it in the same context as best wishes, for instance a journey or an exam or any other task. Once, our friend set out to approach a girl and we told him the same thing, “May the force be with you!”

Andre Fernando, 22 (computer programmer)
I loved Samuel L Jackson’s character in Pulp Fiction when I saw the movie for the first time. I liked the way he talked, his dialogues and everything, and since then I have picked up one of his lines which has become a personal catchphrase I keep repeating to myself. Whenever I find myself getting stressed out or angry, I just tell myself “Be cool, b**ch”. It’s kind of funny so I manage to chill out quickly.

Royce Noronha, 22 (marketing executive)
My favourite television character is Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother. I don’t get a chance to quote him often but I remember one occasion where I was going to a costume party. A friend and I decided to dress up as superheroes. My friend was really nervous because he thought no one else would actually dress for it. I was dressed in my costume, went over to his house before the party and when he opened the door, I stuck my chest out and said, “Suit up”!
