This World Homeopathy Week, Let’s Understand this System of Alternative Medicine

Annually, World Homeopathy Awareness Week is celebrated from the 10th of April to the 16th of April. Structured by the World Homeopathy Awareness Organization, the week is a celebration of both homeopaths and those who have been healed with homeopathy. Every year, free public events are held across the world that includes lectures, awareness seminars, and free or reduced-price clinics. Homeopaths use this week to promote their practice and gain publicity as well. Homeopathy products contain no active ingredients at all. Two centuries ago, the first homeopaths decided that diluting an active medicine makes them more potent.

The main aim of World Homeopathy Awareness Week is to raise public awareness of homeopathy and improve availability to homeopathy.

10th April marks the birthday of Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the German physician who is credited with creating homeopathy. Therefore it is chosen as the starting date of the event. Dr. Samuel had discovered that the same substance that could cause a reaction in a healthy person could also be a remedy for a person suffering from similar symptoms.

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a structure of alternative medicine that uses small, highly diluted doses of natural substances to activate the body’s own healing abilities. A holistic approach, Homeopathy uses small doses of specific remedies using the model of individualization. Everyone is unique and no two people are alike. Two people suffering from headaches will have completely different homeopathic cures prescribed to them.

Homeopathy uses the law- ‘Like treats like.’ This means that if you can trigger the body into believing that the body is reacting in the presence of a certain agent, it will defend against that agent. Symptoms can be relieved if the natural defense mechanisms in your body are harnessed

Pros about Homeopathy:

  • Homeopathy is a way of attempting to relieve some symptoms of a serious illness to comfort the person suffering from it. It may be temporary and the results vary from person to person.
  • It can be safely used by pregnant women, nursing women, children and infants who are highly sensitive to conventional medicines.
  • They are readily available and can, therefore, be used by anyone.
  • They can be stored for long periods of time and are non-invasive to the body, with minimal side effects.
  • It does not interfere with other medications taken by someone

Cons about Homeopathy:

  • It is not approved by conventional science as the evidence is anecdotal. Some people insist that it worked while others report the opposite. There is no surety of getting positive results.
  • It is imperative to know that active medicines are to be taken in case of serious illnesses as Homeopathy has more of a placebo effect. In case of emergency, people cannot be contingent upon homeopathic treatment.
  • It is tough to distinguish between good professional homeopathic doctors from bogus ones.
  • Because of the simplicity of the concept, many people think they can self-medicate themselves. Attempting to take homeopathy medicines without consultation could be tricky. The belief in homeopathy is based highly on successful cases. That is all. There is no evidence that homeopaths can prove that their medications work. That is why scientists don’t believe in them and yet, it has still worked for some.
