Wonder Woman Named UN Brand Ambassador For Gender Equality

At first we thought it was a joke, but turns out the news is true. DC Comic’s legendary character Wonder Woman was recently appointed as the brand ambassador for gender equality. This comes just weeks after sources confirmed that the fictional character was also a champion of LGBTQ rights.

According to Comic Book Resources the superhero will be honoured at a function in New York next week which also coincides with the 75th anniversary of the character’s creation. The event is said to be attended by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson apart from other surprise guests. Rumours have also been doing the rounds that actors who have played Wonder Woman over the years may be present, including Lynda Carter.

The event will also see the launch of the UN’s landmark global campaign to support Sustainable Development Goal #5 which is achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.

Although we’re huge fans of Wonder Woman, what we can’t get over is how a fictional character will speak up for gender equality when it really matters. Wonder Woman’s 75th anniversary is also being honoured by the US Postal Service with the issue of a series of four Wonder Woman stamps. Kristin Seaver, a representative from the Service said that they were saluting this heroic role model and her legacy which they are sure will span another 75 years.  She also added that Wonder Woman was one of the first female super heroes in the world who has inspired millions of girls over the last 75 years.

Another comic site, the Mary Sue also praised Wonder Woman saying that her character is an easily recognisable symbol of what women can become once freed from a patriarchal society.
