One of the most stunning sights can be witnessed today in the form of supermoon that will light up the sky, appearing 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than usual.
The moon’s orbit around Earth is slightly elliptical so sometimes it is closer and sometimes it’s farther away. When the moon is full as it makes its closest pass to Earth it is known as a supermoon.
Today’s full moon will be not only the closest and brightest supermoon of 2016 but also the largest since 1948.
This last happened in 1948 that is 68 years ago and next you can witness this sight is in November 2034 according to NASA so don’t miss out on this rare spectacle. Today the moon will come within 3,56,508 kms of earth. Usually, the average distance between the two is 3,884,402 km.
The moon will be very easy to spot in the sky. The full moon will be seen all night at most locations around the world. But to see the natural satellite in all its glory on Monday night, go to a place with low light pollution armed with your telescopes or binoculars, Sri N Raghunandan, Director of Planetary Society of India said.
NASA says the moon will be at perigee at 6:22am EST for those in the US. That equates to 4:52pm IST here in India, but it won’t be visible then as moonrise isn’t until sometime later around the country.
