Filmmakers Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan have made sure that everyone this weekend will be thoroughly entertained and in for a rollercoaster ride of emotions (that is if you manage to get tickets). ‘Barbenheimer’ is something the internet has come up with to talk about the polar opposite films, Barbie and Oppenheimer.
But, why are these two movies such a big deal? Let’s start with Barbie first. Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is based on the cultural pop icon, Barbie and is all about pink and glamour. Even though we’ve had a lot of animated Barbie movies over the years, this movie aims to bring the Barbie world to life, and it seems that they’ve done a pretty good job.
On the other hand, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is truly one of the most anticipated movies of all time. Nolan is known for his penchant to keep things real, and to shoot on IMAX cameras. The movie is based on J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb. It was also revealed that the film hasn’t used any VFX, and even the Trinity Test (the first-ever detonation of a nuclear weapon) was recreated for the movie. The movie has an astounding cast, starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, and Robert Downey Jr. Although, it is worth noting that, unlike the Barbie frenzy, this movie has gained popularity because of the filmmaker, as Nolan is known to deliver the best.
With both movies releasing on July 21st, the Barbenheimer trend was birthed organically. Because the movies have polar opposite sensibilities, it was quite amusing for the internet to put the two next to each other. With this trend, fans all over the world have been anticipating the two movies, and most have made plans to watch both movies on the same day. No matter which movie you watch, it is obvious that you are in for an amazing experience. So, if you’re wondering what to do this weekend, know that the theatres are going to be fully booked for the coming weeks.
