As part of its support to environmental conservation measures and reiterating its commitment to increasing the green cover in the state, Vivekanand Education Society’s Institute of Technology (VESIT) undertook a tree plantation drive on its sprawling campus. Students and faculty of the institute whole-heartedly participated in the drive which saw the planting of more than 50 trees. The tree plantation exercise was undertaken to lend strength to the ‘Vanamahotsav 2016-17’ initiative of the Maharashtra government under which three crore plants are planned to be planted across the state, starting July.
Lauding the environment-friendly initiative of the Maharashtra government, Shri. Dinesh Tahiliani, Secretary, VES, said, “VESIT and all the affiliated institutes of VES are committed to support the government in their campaigns to protect and nurture the environment. The sewage treatment plant (STP) on our campus, solar energy conservation measures and zero garbage campus asserts our commitment to environmental protection and zero tolerance for wastage of natural resources. As an institute passionate about supporting environmental issues and protection of natural resources, VESIT has undertaken this plantation drive. We welcome and whole-heartedly support the government initiative to plant trees on a state-wide basis.”
“Large forest tracts across the state are being denuded at an alarming rate under the name of development. Unless equal number of trees are planted to compensate for the large-scale deforestation, its long-term effect in the form of soil erosion, flooding and global warming are invitations to environmental disaster. All the stake-holders in the environmental chain including individuals, government agencies and private bodies should reaffirm their commitment to protecting our environmental assets and nurturing them,” said Dr. (Mrs) J.M.Nair, Principal, VESIT.
