V-Day flicks

If you and your date plan to catch a film on Valentine’s Day, you’ll be spoilt for choices with no less than 6 movies releasing on the day

ALL IS LOST

Starring: Robert Redford

Redford plays a man lost in the Indian Ocean after his boat is flooded.

Why it’s exciting: One man takes control of your senses and attention. There is no one else in the film.

Romance quotient: Nil

GUNDAY

Starring: Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra

Two Bangladeshi refugees grow up in Calcutta as gun runners and coal bandits, and fall in love with a cabaret dancer.

Why it’s exciting: Irrfan Khan, who seems to be the only spark in an otherwise typical love triangle.

Romance quotient: Medium

ENDLESS LOVE

Starring: Alex Pettyfer, Gabriella Wilde

David Axelrod and Jade Butterfield, two teenagers, fall in love, only to be ripped apart by their disapproving families.

Why it’s exciting: Is it? Looks like every Bollywood potboiler from the 90s.

Romance quotient: High (only because of the many sex scenes)

HER

Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, Amy Adams

A writer falls in love with his talking operating system, Sam, whose artificial intelligence rivals that of a real woman.

Why it’s exciting: Man falling for a machine is the inevitable next-gen sci-fi love story.

Romance quotient: High

ROBOCOP

Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson

When Alex Murphy, a good and upright policeman, is injured in the line of duty, he is resuscitated as a half man-half robot entity.

Why it’s exciting: It is remade at a time of cutting edge VFX technology, so expectations are high.

Romance quotient: Low

THAT AWKWARD MOMENT

Starring: Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Imogen Poots

After Mickey breaks up with his girlfriend, his two friends vow to stay single with him until they fall in love and face the prospect of breaking their promise.

Why it’s exciting: For a change, Zac Efron does not play a basketball-bouncing teenager.

Romance quotient: Medium-High (clouded by a lot of ‘guy jokes’)
