The Social Outreach Unit of the SVKM’s Usha Pravin Gandhi College of Management celebrated campus pride with a motto of creating awareness regarding the LGBT community of the society and to bring people out of the closet without any resistance. The Pride week (August 14,2017 to August 19,2017) was celebrated with the main objective of spreading awareness and creating an atmosphere of “Love and equality” in the orthodox Indian society.
Pride Talk was the main focus of the week with guest speakers like reputed Gay activists Mr Deepak Kashyap (Gay Rights activist & psychologist),Mr Ankit Bhuptani (LGBTQ rights activist & motivational speaker) and Mr Harish Iyer (columnist, blogger & TEDx speaker) who graced the event and who discussed LGBT rights, sexual orientation and related problems.
The talk consisted about their discovery of sexuality and how they coped up with the struggles they faced, and discussed the inquisitive audience’s questions with an open mind.
A Pride Wall was beautifully decorated with the pictures of famous celebrities who belong to the LGBTQ community. The ‘Pride Shoot’ had the members of the committee in a photo shoot holding placards with supporting content which was posted on social media.
The students were interviewed by the committee to learn their views on the topic and to know more about their experience and how the event changed their perception.
The highlight of the event was when a student came out of the closet and disclosed his sexual orientation emphatically, which was received with a standing ovation.
Living in a society where accepting the fact that a guy can love another guy or a girl loving another girl is considered mortal sin, SVKM’s Usha Pravin Gandhi college of Management took a big step towards changing the stereotypical minds of the Indian society.
