In India, where cities are developing quickly and natural resources are under pressure issues like rising heat waves, worsening pollution, and the spread of plastic waste makes it more important than ever for schools to teach students how to protect the environment. When schools include activities like waste segregation, tree plantation drives, composting, and saving electricity or water, students learn the value of sustainability in action. It helps them understand how small steps like carrying their own water bottles, planting trees, or saving electricity can make a huge difference.
By learning about sustainability from a young age, children grow into responsible citizens who care for their communities and the planet. With India aiming for a greener and cleaner future, schools are the best place to start building that mindset. One such school is The Green School Bangalore, which is the only zero-energy, zero-carbon, and zero-waste school that is designed from the most organic and sustainable materials available. The school promotes green awareness among students and staff through programs, resources, and events that encourage healthier food choices, better nutrition, cleaner indoor air, and the 3Rs: reduce, reuse, and recycle.
The Green School Bangalore (TGSB) has secured the 1st Rank in India with a perfect score of 100/100 in the prestigious National Green School Ranking 2025, announced by Green Mentors on World Environment Day.
The award was presented at the 9th NYC Green School Conference, hosted at the ILR School, Cornell University, New York, on September 23–24, 2025, coinciding with the 80th United Nations General Assembly and Climate Week NYC.
This recognition honors TGSB’s exemplary sustainability practices across the Eight Sustainability Pillars—from Green Curriculum and Biodiversity Conservation to Water Management, Energy Efficiency, and Innovation.
Ms. Usha Iyer, Founder and Principal of The Green School Bangalore, says “This award is a proud milestone in our journey of nurturing green leaders of tomorrow. At TGSB, our students and teachers have embraced sustainability as a way of life. It is heartening to see our vision of education for climate action gain global recognition.”
Through this achievement, TGSB reinforces its contribution to SDG 4 – Quality Education and SDG 13 – Climate Action, emerging as a national benchmark in sustainable education. The ranking has been pioneered by Green Mentors, under the leadership of Mr. Virendra Rawat, who has been championing sustainable education and climate action globally.
