The Indian ‘The Bold & the Beautiful’

A 2nd wife of her 3rd husband is charged along with her 2nd husband for killing her daughter from her 1st husband who was having an affair with her 3rd husband’s son from his 1st wife. What?

After years of practise of blaming Arushi Talwar’s parents for her murder, with little or no knowledge of the case, the drama-hungry Indian society barely let out a gasp at the news of the Sheena Bora’s murder at the hands of her mother Indrani Mukherjea.

The reports in the newspapers and TV channels have pumped up the case to make it look straight out of a crime thriller, complete with an attractive, high society, diabolical murderer mom and a frenzy of confusing characters consisting of ex husbands, children and step children. The potential plot of many upcoming books, movies, and TV shows, this case is so complex that the focus has completely shifted from the victim to everybody else who knew her. The element of news that is sending shockwaves through Indian households is not the murder of a girl by her mother, but rather the three men Indrani Mukherjea has been married to and her disapproval of the relationship between her stepson and her daughter (who she killed).

The crime and people’s reaction to the crime is beyond insensitive as Indrani spent quite a few jolly days lounging around in five stars hotels, her glass sparkling with champagne before she was convicted of the crime. At least that is the image in our heads after watching repeated telecasts of her with the background score suited for the Bollywood villain’s entry and yet, all that our society aunties can focus on is how many men she has had.
