Proficiency Tests Required To Study Abroad

The world has become a global village which has opened up gates for students who want to pursue higher education in a foreign country. Most of the universities abroad have predetermined academic requirements. You need to appear for some proficiency tests and score the required marks in order to secure a seat in specific international colleges or universities. Your performance also determines your chances to score a financial aid or scholarship.

These are some of the common proficiency tests required to study abroad.

GMAT – Graduate Management Admission Test

GMAT is one of the requirements for admission to graduate business management degrees such as Masters of Accountancy and MBA, mostly in the USA. It tests the efficiency needed in business & management such as problem-solving, analytical writing, critical & logical reasoning etc. GMAT is a computer-adaptive exam in English language and Math. It is an inevitable part of the admission process of more than 21,000 universities over  114 countries.  Average GMAT scores range from 570-580.

TOEFL – The Test of English as a Foreign Language

TOEFL is a test to evaluate the ability of an individual to understand and apply English in a setting which is educational in nature. A TOEFL score is necessary to get into any college or university in the United States, Australia, Canada, United Kingdom and many other countries. It also stands as a requirement for a scholarship. Scores of TOEFL are valid for 2 years. The minimum score required for TOEFL is 80.

SAT – Scholastic Aptitude Test

SAT is a test which is a globally accepted college test, mainly used to evaluate the critical thinking skills, problem solving in mathematics, writing and reading. Candidates who want to apply for undergraduate courses, especially in the US and Canada, are required to take the SAT exam. SAT scores are also accepted by many colleges and universities in the United Kingdom. Out of 1600, the mean or average SAT score is 1068.

GRE – Graduate Record Examinations

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a crucial test for students who aim to study in the USA, Canada, and many other graduate and business schools around the globe. It tests verbal, mathematical and general knowledge skills of the candidate for MBA, specialized master’s in business other doctoral programs in many universities and colleges. The minimum score for GRE is 130

ACT – American College Testing

ACT is a test done for admission in colleges and universities for undergraduates. The ACT or America College test is undertaken to understand the candidates knowledge in four areas, that is, reading, mathematics, english and science. ACT makes sure that all students are judged on a common basis, and this also allows the admission provider to anticipate the scores and performance of the candidate  which are academic in nature in the initial year of college. The average score required for ACT is 21.

IELTS – International English Language Testing System

IELTS is a test taken by individuals who plan to pursue higher education abroad. IELTS has two versions available – Academic and General Training. Academic IELTS is taken by those who are willing to go for higher education or professional registration. Those who want to migrate to Australia, Canada and the UK or are looking forward to applying for secondary education and gain work experience in an English-speaking organization take General training. The minimum test score for IELTS is 5.5.

These proficiency tests are amongst several criteria a person needs to pass to gain admission in a foreign college or university. They will surely play a major role to help you secure a seat.
