Phoebe Buffay: The Underrated Friend No One Talks About

There are many reasons why Phoebe Buffay from the sitcom show Friends is most people’s favorite character. Despite being an oddball, she manages to win everyone’s hearts with her eccentric character that yells at minor inconveniences. Although Phoebe is one of the most loved characters of the series, she is completely sidelined when it comes to the role of being a good friend. Many of us will go for Monica, Rachel, Chandler, or Joey when it comes to choosing our favorite ‘friend’, though time and again Phoebe has proved to be a true friend, who’s always got your back. 

Phoebe Buffay beautifully emerged from her dark past, to become a cheerful, compassionate person and a trustworthy friend, who knows how to sprinkle joy in the toughest of times. Although living on the streets gave her a thick skin, she did not allow herself to become a hard person. So let us take a look at some instances that proved her to be a good friend.

The first selfless deed of Princess Consuela that comes to my mind is when she drove Ross all the way to Newark so that he could stop Rachel from going to Paris. Not only did she drive him there in time, but also yelled out her name at the airport so that Ross could meet the love of his life, thanks to her fearless personality! This happens at a time when he had lost all hope and shows that she could fight the world for her friends. And yes, let’s not forget about the plane not having the left ‘phalange’. The girl had some real brains!

Phoebe also helped Monica set up her catering company by helping her cater a funeral which she was unwilling to do due to a large number of guests and a big investment. Money has never been her worry, but fulfilling her friends’ needs and dreams always has been. So, when Monica loses her job and Phoebe learns of an opportunity for her, she immediately offers a large amount of loan to her so that she could cater the event. She prioritized Monica’s happiness and also made sure that she gets an opportunity to advance in her career. Moreover, she also made the client who was acting up pay the owed money for her services, with one of her savage Phoebe moments.

Regina Phalange a.k.a. Phoebe Buffay also saved Rachel by pretending to be pregnant. When Monica, on her wedding day, turns to Rachel and Phoebe to know what is going on about the whole pregnancy thing, Phoebe straight up saves Rachel and says that she is the one who is pregnant. Phoebe, of course with her sharp wits, understands that Rachel is the one who is pregnant but is not yet ready to share the news at the moment. So, Phoebe, just like a true friend, saves the day and keeps Rachel’s secret safe. 

Honesty and loyalty to her friends are the two principles that she lives by. Also, she is quite compassionate, and a supportive friend who never leaves a chance to comfort her friends when they need it the most. One example of this is when she is being honest about Rachel’s boyfriend Paulo being a playboy. Phoebe understands how difficult it is for Rachel to face this and comforts her in the best way possible. Another example is when Carol is giving birth to Ben, Ross gets into an argument with Susan over co-parenting and naming the baby, Phoebe reminds them how the baby has got three loving parents and thus is very lucky, which resolves their argument.
