Oscar Nominated Movies Worth Watching

There is no denying that the Academy Awards are the most awaited award show in the film world, and this year there are some very interesting movies up for the win. Here are some worth watching that are slated to release in India this year.

  1. The Post (currently in cinemas)

At this point the Oscars can easily be named the Meryl’s and that would be incredibly fitting. Watch this movie because Tom Hanks and Spielberg together will take you back to a time where a single article in print could help change the course of history, and that is a much-needed break from the insta stories world of today. Also, did I mention Meryl Streep is in it?

2. Get Out (slated to release March, 2018)

This movie has made waves for addressing race issues and answering hard-hitting questions like the perception of POC’s in modern day America. Another reason to watch this movie is that there is a non-white protagonist in a Hollywood movie and let’s be honest how often does that happen?

  1. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (April, 2018)

A dark comic drama from Academy Award Winner Martin McDonagh, this is a story that revolves around the murder of a young girl and her mother’s unending efforts to find justice.

  1. I, Tonya (December, 2018)

Margot Robbie portrays the role of an ice skating Olympic Athlete in what is said to be an inspiring story of perseverance. Even though this movie is not slated to release till the year-end, if you could watch her in Suicide Squad, this might be worth watching too.

  1. The Shape of Water (Released in December, 2017)

This movie focuses on bisexuality and a relationship between two young men, for this reason alone it may have trouble being released in a conservative nation like ours, but if it does release this could be a great breath of fresh air.

  1. Victoria and Abdul (currently out of cinemas)

Ali Fazal co-stars in this film alongside Judi Dench and the movie is nominated in the categories best Makeup and Hair as well as Costume Design. Although the film released in 2017, I imagine it will air on TV screens closer to the awards and perhaps even after. It is always great to see an Indian actor be recognized and celebrated on the world stage, and for that reason alone this is a film to watch and support.

  1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Already released)

I must admit I haven’t watched any of the Star Wars movies but that doesn’t stop me from realizing the massive following and craze that surrounds this franchise. Nominated for best Sound Editing, this is a movie that is probably worth watching, but you don’t need me to tell you that.

  1. Lady Bird (TBA)

Since Wonder Woman is not nominated for an Academy Award (makes no sense) there is more reason to watch and support Lady Bird, a film directed by Greta Gerwig and the leading ladies of the film are also the only protagonists.  It’s rare to see a female-led movie get this far in the Academy Awards and hopefully this changes with each passing year because time really is up.
