Movies To Celebrate Your Girl Gang

Are you sick of watching women always being portrayed as the same boring, one-dimensional character in all movies? The one who is supposed to be flawless, gorgeous and nurturing, but so unaware of it and always, always secondary to the male lead? Don’t worry, we are too. For you and your girl gang, here are a few movies fixed on the philosophy – sisters before misters!

A celebration of two best friends, Thelma (Geena Davis) & Louise (Susan Sarandon) who bond over a crime spree, work their way through life, make terrible mistakes along the way, but evolve into strong, independent characters. The feminist appeal in the movie makes it a must-watch.

Pink is a dark and honest movie about three friends, who offer each other unwavering support when times get dark, and stay strong for each other, even when the rest of the world turns its back on them. This movie gives us a fresh (and much needed) outlook on what consent in India is thought to be, and what it really is.

When two best friends, C.C. (Bette Midler) and Hillary (Barbara Hershey) go from always being there for each other, to intentionally cutting each other off, the movie talks about toxic friendships and how to overcome them. This movie also highlights the importance of friendships over relationships.

QUEEN

Although Queen is a movie centred on letting go of a toxic relationship and focusing on yourself, a significant part of the movie focuses on Rani’s (Kangana Ranaut) mismatched, but adorable friendship with Vijayalakshmi (Lisa Haydon) who unknowingly helps her let go of her inhibitions and just be happy.

WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT

Despite being thrown into a perpetual journalistic competition, the two protagonists manage to support each other (as friends should) and break nauseating gender norms.

GHOSTBUSTERS

A hilarious classic, this movie is a refreshing and lighthearted take on female friendships.

ANGRY INDIAN GODDESSES

Bollywood’s first film centred on female friendships. This movie is a celebration of the different types of friendships women share and various aspects of their personalities. Truly, a breath of fresh air to watch women portrayed as themselves.

CHAK DE INDIA

A necessary movie about girl power in the field of sports. The movie highlights an animosity between two teammates, who later work through their differences and learn to respect each other.

Shivani Deshmukh

A short girl with sky-high dreams, an unexplained love for books, music and cats, and would gladly choose a pen over a sword.
