India Will Soon Be Home To The World’s Largest Cricket Stadium

Gujarat will soon house the world’s largest cricket stadium, as construction is well underway at the Sardar Patel Cricket stadium in Motera, Ahmedabad. The stadium will reportedly have a capacity of seating almost 1.10 lakh people. The project is reportedly nearing completion.

The foundation for the stadium was laid in January 2018, and is being helmed by Narendra Modi, led by the Gujarat Cricket Association. It is being designed by renowned architecture for M/s. Poplous, the same firm that designed the Melbourne Stadium, which is the current largest stadium in the world, with a seating capacity of 90,000.

The total cost of the project is estimated to reach up to 700 crores, sprawling over 63 acres of land. The stadium will also house four dressing rooms, a clubhouse with over 50 rooms, 76 corporate boxes and a gargantuan swimming pool, in addition to three practice grounds and an indoor training academy. The previous Motera stadium, which had a capacity of 54,000, was demolished in 2016 to make way for this new project.

“There will be a concourse to connect the entire stadium for pedestrian and vehicular movement. Moreover, the clubhouse will be equipped with 55 rooms and an Olympic size swimming pool,” said Parimal Nathwani, Vice President of the GCA. The stadium’s parking lot will accommodate around 3,000 four-wheeler cars and up to 10,000 two-wheelers.

The tender for the construction has been given to Larsen and Turbo (L&T), and is “the dream project of the state cricket board and after its completion, it will become a symbol of pride for the nation,” Nathwani said on his Twitter.

Eden Gardens in Kolkata, is currently the second largest cricket stadium in the world with a seating capacity of nearly 70,000.
