MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING

Greek-American Fotoula “Toula” Portokalos transforms from a dowdy young woman into a confident, self-assured and beautiful lady when she falls in love with Ian Miller, who is not Greek. When he asks her to marry him, there is some trepidation in Toula’s family owing to Ian’s non-Greek heritage. As the wedding nears, her family puts up resistances in various forms. This quirky-bordering on-crazy family will provide ample laughter for a mother-daughter movie session.

YOU’RE WEARING THAT?

This New York Times bestseller is by Deborah Tannen who rose to fame with her book You just don’t understand which was published in 1990. Deborah, who has a PhD in linguistics, uses her expertise and analytical skills to decode the delicate fabric of interpersonal communication and how it weaves the relationship between mothers and daughters. In spite of its academic theme, the book is a light read and will by enjoyed both by mothers and their girls for its relatability.

THANK YOU MOM

Punk band Good Charlotte are not exactly the kind to sing soft, mushy ballads about anyone. And they don’t do that for their mothers either. No, they don’t scream or thrash their guitars about, but instead, in their upbeat punk-pop style, they express how much their mothers mean to them. Without irony.

BLAKE SHELTON – BASED ON A TRUE STORY…

Country singer Blake Shelton, better known as judge and coach on reality show The Voice, released his eighth studio album late March. The tracks in Based on a True Story can be classified under various sub-genres and are, as the title suggests, inspired by Shelton’s life experiences. The first song, Boys ‘Round Here creates an ambience of the countryside with its vivid lyrical description of the activities of country boys, and although shows a slight hip-hop influence, it serves as a good introduction to the rest of the album. The standouts are Small Town Big Time and Country on the Radio which are typical country songs with loud guitar and melodious riffs. Other notable songs are Sure Be Cool If You Did and Ten Times Crazier. On the whole, the album is soul-stirring, heartfelt and entertaining.
