If you’re planning to study abroad, you’ve probably stared at this choice until your eyes crossed. Three tests. Same general purpose. Wildly different vibes. So which one do you actually take?
The short answer? It depends entirely on where you want to go. But let’s dig into what makes each test different and why some universities will take one and absolutely won’t budge on another.
TOEFL, which stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language, is the top pick in the U.S. Its roots go back to 1964, and it’s still a favourite among American colleges with over 13,000 of them worldwide accepting it. The computer-based test is about two hours long, and in January 2026, the scoring system was changed. Instead of the previous 0-120, it now uses a 1-6 band scale.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the all-purpose one. With more than 11,000 institutions accepting it worldwide, it’s pretty much accepted everywhere except, ironically, a lot of U.S. universities (although acceptance is increasing). It is available in two versions: academic and general training. The paper or computer-based exam includes a live speaking test where you face a real person. That takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes total.
PTE (Pearson Test of English) has been around since 2009, but it’s still a relative newcomer in the discussion. Only about 3,000 institutions accept it, and it’s rapidly gaining popularity in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. It is a completely computer-based test, AI does the scoring, and you get your results within 48 hours instead of waiting a week.
This is where the actual decision lives.
Going to the U.S.? TOEFL is your safest bet. American universities prefer it overwhelmingly. Yes, many will accept IELTS, but when you’re competing with thousands of other applicants, you don’t want friction.
Headed to the UK, Australia, Canada, or New Zealand? IELTS is widely accepted and trusted everywhere. These countries have been using IELTS forever, and it’s baked into their visa requirements. PTE is gaining real traction here, though, especially in Australia and Canada, where some top universities now accept it alongside IELTS.
Multiple countries on your list? IELTS is probably your best bet for flexibility. If you’re shotgunning applications across different countries, IELTS gives you the most doors open.
Want the fastest results? PTE wins by a landslide. You’ll have scores in 48 hours. IELTS takes 3-5 days, TOEFL takes 6-10 days. If you need scores for an upcoming application deadline, that matters.
All three of them cover the same skills in different ways.
TOEFL is heavily geared toward academic English. You will be reading college-level passages, listening to lecture recordings, and writing academic essays. The speaking section is recorded; you talk to your computer, not a person.
IELTS is less focused. Academic IELTS is mainly for university-level English but it also touches on everyday communication. The speaking part is in person with an examiner, which some people find easier and more natural than talking to a machine.
PTE is a computer-based and fluency assessment test. The AI scoring system means it judges pronunciation and natural speech patterns. Everything’s on screen, and some sections integrate skills (like speaking and writing together) rather than testing them separately.
In India (and roughly globally), the costs are nearly identical:
– IELTS: ₹18,000
– TOEFL: ₹16,900
– PTE: ₹18,000-19,000
So cost probably shouldn’t be your deciding factor. All three also let you take them multiple times, and your scores last for two years. If you don’t get what you want on the first try, you can retake it.
Start here: What’s your target country or university? Check their website. Go to their admissions or language requirements page. They’ll tell you exactly which tests they accept. That should narrow things down immediately.
If multiple tests are accepted, consider your strengths. Do you do better with face-to-face interaction? IELTS includes a real speaking interview. More comfortable with computers? PTE and TOEFL are both on-screen. Do you understand American English better than British English, or vice versa? IELTS tests both, TOEFL leans American, and PTE can do either.
Check test availability near you. IELTS has the most test centres globally. TOEFL is available in over 200 countries. PTE is expanding but still has fewer locations, so if you’re in a remote area, that matters.
Think about timing. Need results fast? PTE. Can you wait a week? IELTS or TOEFL work fine.
Here’s what we don’t hear enough: all three tests are credible. Universities aren’t sitting around thinking “PTE is suspicious” or “IELTS is easier.” They’re accepted globally for legitimate reasons. Your English ability matters way more than which test you pick. A good TOEFL score, an IELTS 8, or a PTE in the 80s all equally demonstrate your capability to handle the English language at a university level.
Picking the wrong test in the country where you want to study can easily lead to a mistake. Therefore, at first, find the place, then check the exact requirements of the school and choose only afterwards. Stop throwing your time and money out the window on a “harder” or “easier” test. Just pick the one your target school most prefers.
Just making a decision is not enough; the real challenge will be in preparing. That part matters a lot more than which test name is on your certificate.
