How You Can Survive In The Gig Economy: Learn How To Thrive

The gig economy isn’t a new concept, it’s been around for quite a while, and is better known as the freelance economy. The reason for the successful and steady growth of the gig economy is mainly the job flexibility that comes with it, and the fact that it helps individuals and businesses alike. The pandemic was another factor that led to the popularity of today’s gig economy, as huge corporates were forced to work from home. Entering the career world after college, the gig economy can be a viable option for many because of the decent work-life quality, and flexibility. It also provides the opportunity to work on multiple gigs, make decent money, and perhaps even follow the field of your passion.

However, despite all these advantages and perks of the gig economy, there are also a few drawbacks, which can be avoided depending on how you deal with them. It can often get difficult to fall into routines and stay motivated to work at all times. Considering the working hours are flexible, it is only natural to slack off every now and then, which could potentially get worse if not rectified. Being in the freelance economy, it is also tough to put yourself out there and have your presence known for prolonged periods of time, which is why it is important to constantly update your working status on professional websites and platforms.

So, how does one survive and do well for themselves in today’s fast-paced gig economy? You can start by establishing routines and making sure you follow them. The word ‘routine’ already sounds boring, so let’s go with an arrangement. Plan out your day, or your week, and set goals for them. This will only help you focus better and reach your maximum potential. Having a plan, a schedule, or a to-do list helps you stay motivated.

Staying connected with your network when you’re freelancing can be tough, and that’s why it is important to constantly build and maintain your network. This way, you can stay on top of all the freelancing opportunities around you. Traditional networking, as well as connecting with people online can help you boost your freelance career immensely. It is important to identify your target audience in your field and look for effective ways to connect and collaborate on projects with them.

Through proper networking, you can build your brand effectively. As a freelancer, you take care of every aspect of your work, and by creating market value for yourself, you position yourself as a brand out there, instead of an entrepreneur with a business.

In terms of making your presence known, in today’s world of digitalization, creating a profile that thoroughly highlights your skills and expertise is imperative and helps a lot. Look at what other freelancers are doing in your field, what are they doing to stay out there? With this, you can also try out online platforms that offer freelance opportunities. This is probably the easiest and most accessible way to successfully make your way through the gig economy. This requires you to do research and a little bit of trial and error, so you know what works for you and what doesn’t. So make sure you put in enough time for actual results.

Working and figuring out your way through the gig economy comes with its own set of challenges and it can get overwhelming sometimes. Just know that you need to give yourself time to know what works best for you and where you can put in the right effort!
