HOPE: A CSR Activity That Encourages The Youth To Go Green

Wilson College, BMS department created a “Legacy of Leaf of Life” Mosaic emphasising on today’s youth to plant at least one sapling to combat climate change. 

The mosaic was created as a part of the CSR activity of the Wilson College – HOPE (Help Our People Elevate), an initiative founded by founder Dr.Zuleika Homavazir 12 years ago.

Students from over 40 schools and colleges came together at the iconic Girgaum Chowpatty to support #josh is a green campaign, took an oath to plant a sapling and increase the green cover over Mumbai city. It ended with the National Anthem.

Students from Jai Hind College, Lala Lajpat Rai College of Commerce and Economics, Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, Bhavans, Elphinstone, Kirti, Saraf, Chetna, BJCC, Don Bosco, SIES, Valia, Burhani, Nagindas Khandwala, Oriental, Wilson High School along with other departments of the Self-Finance Courses of Wilson College were present in support of the initiative. 

The event was flagged off by Dr.Anna Pratima Nikalje, Principal, Wilson College, Mrs.Pimenta, Principal, Wilson High School and Shri Raj Purohit with Dr.Zuleika Homavazir, Founder – HOPE and Chief SFC Coordinator.

Other initiatives as part of their #josh are green campaign included celebrating VAN MAHOTSAV week and being part of the Green Army, Government of India Initiative.

During the month of June, students of Wilson BMS presented saplings to over 40 schools across Mumbai including GD Somani Memorial School, St. Columba School, St. Agnes High School and St. Anne High School to name a few. This phase was carried out in association with the Ministry of Forest & Wildlife Department of Thane & Kalyan, Government of India. This movement was supported by RJ Pritam Pyaare, RJ Mallishka, Sumeet Sachdev, Kailash Kulkarni (CEO of L&T) and Parul Chaudhary.

On the 21st of July, students did a plantation drive in association with the Centre for Environmental Research & Education (CERE) and the NGO – Clean We Go and planted over 2000 saplings at the Gagangiri Maharaj Ashram in Manori.

The next phase of the #Josh is Green CSR activity will include rainwater harvesting system installation on campus, a second round of Tree Plantations at Radha Soami Satsang at Shahad in association with Ministry of Forest & Wildlife Department of Kalyan, as well as installation of Solar Panels on campus; a move towards clean energy production.

Through these 3 phases, Wilson BMS conveys a simple message to the world that students are future citizens of a Nation, we can reverse the adverse effects on the environment and that we must take proactive steps towards healthier, cleaner and greener India. 

HOPE INITIATIVE to date holds the record in Asia book of records, Limca book of records and India book of records. It has impacted umpteen lives, associated with more than 80 NGO’s in the past 12 years.
