The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) India has appointed Asian Games gold medallist Hima Das as the first ever Youth Ambassador. The announcement was made on UNICEF India’s official Twitter page.
“Meet our Youth Ambassador, Hima Das! The Asian Games medallist is @UNICEF India’s first ever youth ambassador as part of #WorldChildrensDay celebration. #GoBlue,” said the announcement, which was made on Wednesday, coinciding with Children’s Day.
“I’m honoured to be chosen as @UNICEF India’s Youth Ambassador, and I hope I will be able to inspire more children to follow their dreams,” Das said in reaction to her new role. Born in Assam’s Nagaon district, Das brought home gold in the Asian Games 4×400 metre relay event, and a silver in the Women’s 400-metre race event.
UNICEF’s India wing works with the government of India to ensure that each child born in this country gets the best start in life, thrives and develops to his or her full potential. They work on causes such as child survival, growth and development, creating a Protective and Learning Environment, adolescent empowerment, evidence-based policy influencing and advocacy, and more.
In another splendid initiative, a science lab was inaugurated in Chitkul Social Welfare School, near #Hyderabad, by EPAM and CII #Telangana amid a colourful programme to encourage more students, especially girls, to pursue STEM subjects.
